Coal Tipple off limits????

Well there is a nice big sign telling you to stay away from the coal tipple. It states no fishing or loitering. I knew this was going to happen when the SPA sold the site for $3 million. The state spends millions of dollars on artificial reefs, yet they are privatizing in going to destroy the oldest and one of the most productive spots in Charleston County. Shame on you SPA, Department of natural resources, and anyone else involved in this moneymaking measure.

Private sign or DNR / Coast Guard sign?

They don’t own the water! As long as you are in a boat how can they stop you:question: Remember the Tide line law!

Private sign. I have a picture of it saved on my iPhone but it will not let me load it. The sign says no fishing or loitering, also says that it is under video surveillance… Oooooooo! Spoke to a local Game Warden today and he stated as long as you’re not tied to the structure there is nothing they can do.

“Loitering”? Who “loiters” on a boat?

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?

Me putting a dock on the water doesn’t extend my property ownership to the water. This should be no different. Now if you’re practicing your free climbing out there, that’s a different story I suppose. The way I see it, that sign will scare a number of boaters off, leaving more fish for me.

A lot of empty noise, in my opinion. As mentioned, as long as you’re not tied off or in physical contact with “their property,” there’s nothing they can do about people fishing there.

God bless the “ignore” function.

Yessir! Stopped and caught 2 small sheeps and a little mangrove on it yesterday afternoon then moved on…

I fished it last weekend and caught a few SMALL black drum and a bunch of pinfish. Was looking for sheeps but no luck.

wondering if someone was crawling/climbing around it? otherwise, yeah, no leg to stand on.

There is (was?) a dock on the stono that said “Only bad guides fish private docks” or something like that. Wish I had a picture of it.

Showing my age a little but many years ago you could walk out on it to fish. I only did it a couple of times but never saw anyone or get run off.

so whats wrong with the SPA selling off “neglected” assets? Sounds like good business for the tax payers…

You can bet DNR did not have anything to do with this. That pipe extrusion business that drove all the steel pilings is probably responsible also if they have video surveillance shot them the bird but don’t do anything illegal like mooning them. My bet is they will eventually have some rent a cop to come out and attempt to threaten you with arrest for trespassing which is BS as they don’t own the water.

Let me guess…you own the water around your dock?

i don’t own the water around my dock, and neither does the new owner of the coal dump property

The question was, Why are you against the SPA selling what has been described as neglected property?

I just assumed they put up the sign to protect themselves from people actually trying to get onto the structure itself and getting hurt and trying to sue. I did not think fishing around it would not be an issue.

There’s one in the Leadenwah now too…

Worst part is that homeowners are now stringing lines from their pierhead or floating dock to the base of their walkways to prevent casting into/under the docks. Really beginning to make me upset. Some docks I’ve been fishing all of my life are now unfishable because some jacka$$ moved here and bought the property and doesn’t want someone catching “their” fish.
