Cobia Sight Fishing Catches

I finally got the keeper cobia on the fly that I have been trying to get for years. Feels good to check that box. We got two OTF that day. One was released.

Above fish landed

Two caught on live bait. Fish on right is the same fish as above.

This one was too small to keep.

Weeds on the river. I dug the herring bone pattern.

My friend and fly fishing coach with one from last year… He didn’t land one on these trips but has shown me how to get it done. His best advice for me this year was slow down and take a breath. It’s hard not to get too excited when they are within casting distance. His military training keeps him cool and calm when I would be freaking out. He had a nice fish hooked up OTF while I was on the helm and we were trying to hook a second fish. He had his fly line wrapped around the reel he was so calm that he had to tell me what had happened after the fish got off. I thought everything was ok and the fish was on the reel. The next thing I know he was holding the broken leader in his hand. We did land the other fish though. A double would have been awesome but wasn’t meant to be. Maybe it will happen on the next trip.

Here is one of my buddy hooked up from last year. He can’t fish with me this year since he’s deployed but I look forward to next season with him. I am proud to have him as a friend and

Sweet! Now that looks like some fun!

It’s not easy to sight fish for them but it’s a blast. You gotta be ready to react quickly.

That’s some cool pics! Thanks for posting. Good job.

Good haul! That guy serving is my BIL…

Talked to him yesterday and about broke him up telling him we caught a couple in the broad on saturday!

Tight Lines!

Awesome post Corks! I don’t fish for cobs but you sure make me ask myself why not!

Wirenut,

You should join the chaos on the river. It gets more crowded every year but DNR seems to be managing the species very well. When I was a guide 20+ years ago, we didn’t see anywhere near the quality of run that we have today. It is a ton of fun to sight fish for them. We only have about a week or so left before it slows down and they go offshore.
