What sort of artificials can be used on Cobia in the Broad River? Anybody ever use buck tail jigs? Also, what sort of rig is used to catch Cobia on the surface? I’ve heard of balloons but what sort of leader would that encompass?

Bucktails with a gulp eel trailer work good. Bright colors anything ridiculous looking… They really eat just about everything. You can set up a balloon rig with regular 50-80lb fluorocarbon tied straight to your braid with an albright or uni uni knot. Look up how to tie the balloon to your main line so you can slide it up and down to adjust your depth/lenght of leader away from the balloon. When floating a bait on the surface I like using the thinner wire circle hooks… Bait seems to swim better to me when its not dragging around a thick heavy hook.

Hogy lures work great for sight fishing
Are you just dropping down the bucktails behind the chum bag while anchored up in ab 25 ft water?
Which sort of hOgy lures are you talking about? The double-hooked eels on a jighead?
I should be out in the BR tomorrow, lookin’ forward tO trying the artificials out.
Use bucktails to cast to fish that are swimming on the surface…

I was fishing on the pier on yesterday, and hooked into a 32" cobia (my first ever). Used a thread herring, that was sitting about mid depth.
We do not rise to the occassion…but fall to the level of our training
Wow, congrats on the 32" cobia. My buddy caught several keepers free-lining greenies at the Betsy Ross today. MadFire, are you straight retrieving to keep it on the surface or jigging it at a certain depth?
Keep it on the surface… Try to get a reaction strike.

Do a search on here and you will find plenty of quality info. The river fishing should have peaked by now and most fish have moved offshore now.
