Got my first speared cobia last week. Was about 35lbs.
So what kind of water were you diving in?
Depth? Visibility?

i lost a speargun to one about 20 lbs 2 years ago, hit him about a foot behind his gills, definetly the ride of my life!!!
congrats
Sorry for the tardy reply.
Depth: 40ft, but the fish were on the surface
Clarity: 15-20ft
I had six between 15-35lbs milling around the boat. They didn’t seem interested in live baits, artificials or anything else I could throw, so I put on the fins and jumped in. The kill shot was straight down throught the top of the skull and blew out the ismthus between the gills. He bled out quick and wasn’t too hard to get back to the boat. I wouldn’t want to shoot one any bigger than that though. Also shot 3 spades (the largest was 9lbs) at the same spot the next week.

My brother shot a large cobia (75lb class) and did not hit the spine
on a broadside shot, it drug him around for quite a while.[:0]
As it dragged him past some rubble, he decided to hang his fin in some discarded concrete bridge rubble, until the spear pulled out,- he said the hit was in the gut.
This also taught him to not try to hold onto barnacle encrusted concrete without a heavy wetsuit or shoot too large a target
Dave still has scars from the barnacles.
