i haven’t fished for cobia in probably 15 or 20 years, but im going this spring, im not touching any skanky ass eels, ill probably be fishing st helenas sound, the old light house bouy, what size hooks should i use, do i sight fish, fish on bottom ,drift at a certain depth and what for bait? mullet or crabs?
any input would be appreciated thanks
I use 8/0 circle hooks. You can sight fish around structure or anchor up on a good rip. I stagger the baits from the bottom to the top, fish the entire water column. Whiting are my preferred bait, with crabs second. Any live fish works pretty good, cobia aren’t real particular. I don’t do eels either

Don’t forget about the reefs if weather permits. At certain times, you will get several good shots sight fishing for cruising fish over top of good structure.
I was at the reef in the Fall and just as I released an endangered BSB a huge cobia came up and slammed it 10’ behind my outboard. I had some real big live mullet I netted in the river on the way out. I rigged one up and worked it some around the boat. All I got was a shark.
I have never caught a cobia when cobia fishing but have got them when striper and red fishing with larger live bait.
