Cobia??

Is there any sign that the cobia are on their way? I’m in Greenville and will be down on the 16th. Hoping they show by then!!

Dogwoods are blooming, that’s a sign. Should be good by the 16th:smiley:

They are like CPAs. Once taxes are mailed, they are ready for action.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

Agree with Larry’s Dogwood theory, but I would say it will still be a couple weeks. They might start showing up on the nearshore wrecks in about two.

Looks like the first report on here last year was April 19th… It’s definitely worth giving it a try on the 16th. If ya don’t go ya won’t know. Can’t catch em sitting on the couch. Good luck to ya!

We caught our first one last year in late March, fishing at night. Last year was a much warmer winter though. As Adam said, you won’t know if you don’t go.

Dogwoods blooming has always been the old timers indicator, but I find that pecan trees leafing are more reliable. When the dogwoods bloom they might be in Port Royal, but when the pecans leaf they will be in Port Royal:wink:

Larry- What was the water temp. when you caught the first one last March? I’ve seen them in temps. as low as 65, but obviously see more as it gets closer to 68-70.

Had to pull out my log book. March 26, 64 degrees, 11 pm, high outgoing tide, live whiting for bait at The Turtle.

That’s because most people who catch the early fish have learned to keep their mouths tight  You can have the place to yourself for a few weeks but with the first Internet report you’ll have 200 boats for company the next day.

You got that right Larry… Only time of year you can walk across the broad river and never get your feet wet. Fishing at 11pm you shoulda had the place to yourself anyway. I haven’t been out lately… What’s the water temp right now? I think last I heard was 58 probably a week ago.

Two weeks ago it was 58 on the Sound side of Pinckney. Reds were still schooling pretty good, so hadn’t changed behavior yet. I had no idea the cobia came in until the water temps were back around 70. I find that very interesting…

All things being equal, I would rather be on the water.

pecans are budding out

That’s what I was just going to report. It finally quit raining, the sun came out and my pecan tree leaves have just popped out

It’s time men. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone has already caught a few.
