Cold Front

Nice & cool on the weekend mornings. How’s it going to affect the chances of catching a fish? Got a pass, so I’m thinking about going Sunday morning.

Might be some schooling? Looks like a fair amount of rain tomorrow also. Hard to say. The fishing may be good - the catching ?

So will the schooling be mire active this weekend?

We cruised all around bear creek this morning with overcast clouds the whole time and found zero schooling. We did catch the Lake Murray slam on artificial though. Redbreast, perch, largemouth, striper, and gar.

It was mighty windy, glad we found some shelter being on that side of the lake. I feel sorry for anyone trying to put in at the dam.

I hitched a ride with a buddy. Didn’t start fishing till prob 8ish…had 15 all on live bait in 50’ of water close to the bottom. Mixed sizes from 16" to 27. Around spence. Wind was horrible, wanted to search for some more fish but just wasn’t worth getting beat up.

Bob, did you get out on Sunday? We fished on Sunday …

Wind was more than we would like but the fish were biting pretty good …

Started in the middle of the big pool with downrods a little after 7 and had 10 by 8:00 …

Catching got slow so we moved around a bunch and checked out several different spots before settling in front of Beard’s where we started pulling planers and freelines along with a couple of downrods …

We picked up another 10 before we realized we should have stopped 5 ago …

We only kept 8 keepers and two shorts that weren’t going to make it … All the rest were surface fish so they released with no worries …

Nice to see some planer action (FINALLY), but It reminded me how much I hate pulling them in the wind while in open water …

Here’s a couple of pics for the naysayers …

RJ on the rod …

… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

Glad you got 'em.

Nope, that’s Liz’s side … She won’t run them that far out weighted unless we’re in deep water …

No, I never made it out. I set my alarm the night before and forgot to turn it on. Woke up about 7:30 & decided it was too late to get going. I did manage to finally wash & clean my truck though.

On Raystown Lake up here in PA they use planer boards with 1.5oz weights. Basically a planer board down line. I don’t think it would work with the water bugs, they use a heavier board. I’m not sure why I never tried it there.

Tom you did that with me last sept or Oct I think. Yea it won’t work with the bugz. I have caught many fish on a board with a 2oz weight hanging under it may, june, and sept.

Putting in at the dam and pulling boards up the big pool on the Irmo side. Finally got my rod holders figured out on the Whaler, and hope to run 6-7 rods out the back now. Let you know how it works out.

We went out yesterday and tried dropping live heron til my live well killed them all. I gotta get me a bait tank!!! We fished from lunch island to the towers. I had a lot of action on my sonar, but none on the rods. We put in at Wessinger around 5:45 and fished til 8:30 or so, when all the Herring became dead bait. Tried trolling umbrella rigs after that. We pulled them between 400 and 500’ behind the boat. No luck there either. By this time I was completely convinced the stripers don’t really exist. While trolling around the towers the water came to life!!! (Around 1100) Stripers busting bait fish everywhere. No way I could sneak my boat up to them with out spooking them. We gave it our best! Our day is still yet to come! Was a way better day, than being at work.

There really is no substitute for HEALTHY live bait…and a good bait tank does just that. Wish I had more to sell. Think I have sold close to 20 since feb. People are really seeing it’s worth paying for a good tank…actually getting ready to leave to go pick up a couple more that have already been sold. These will prob be my last tanks till the 1st of the year.

We did fish this morning. Put 20 fish in the box in less than an hr. Took friends back to the ramp and as I dropped them off picked up 2 more friends and let them catch their 10 in about 30 min…

First trip held nicer fish but still a mix of about 50/50 when it came to 21" fish to shorts. But even the shorts were in that 18-20" range with the biggest around 29".

2nd trip were all 18-20’s except did have 1 in the 27" range.

The morning bite is Def better than the afternoon/evening bite from what I seen.

All fish caught around jakes. (Just look for the boats) thone fish have been stacking up

Dang MM!!! 30 fish yesterday and I didn’t get a single. I’m fairly convinced it’s time to go with a guide. I’m starting to get a lot more interested in the Stripers. Living this close to Eptings camp, and not having to pick my days and drive 3 hours to the coast is extremely appealing. I don’t plan to let my boat sit all winter, and hope to put me some winter stripers in it.

Summer time striper fishing is boring to me…winter time fishing is where it’s at buddy! You Def need to get out there this winter. May take some time in the water but it’s worth it…

Either of you guys tried a spoon on them? Thinking about making a pit stop on the way to work in the morning.

Haven’t had a chance to try it. Literally they are eating as fast as you can put a bait down. Backed off to just 1 rod per person and they never found the rod holders. But I am sure theyes will eat a spoon no problem
