College Football Playoff Committee

Can someone tell me why Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is on this committee?

Seriously I want to know. What’s her credentials? Seriously.

The selection committee will choose the four teams that advance to the College Football Playoff beginning after the 2014 regular season, as well as rank and place at-large teams in the noncontract New Year’s Day bowls – the Cotton, Fiesta and Chick-fil-A.

Definitely a diverse bunch with close ties to high level football in one way or another except her. I have no answers for that one.

other than she is probably smarter than anyone else on the committee! Hard to find people that show the work ethic needed to do their homework on this subject that doesn’t have some sort of bias in the equation. She doesn’t have any bias and IMO will do what she is supposed to do to find the best teams for the playoff.

Who would you want on the committee? Slive? Head of ESPN?

She likes to play a little golf and is a member of Augusta national and so forth.

My understanding is that she is objective, intelligent, honest, forthright and a rabid college football fan that knows the game better than most.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I heard this on one of the sports talk radio shows the other day.

That woman is brilliant and a huge sports fan. I would support her in any endeavor. You should feel lucky.

There are a thousand people that meet that criteria. What’s her “football” credentials?

First, what is your criteria for “football” credentials?

Second, she will be doing is help pick 4 teams to be in a playoff. Not exactly rocket science or a difficult task for someone that is actually intelligent, right?

Third, no matter who is one of the 4, when it comes time to pick there will be people crying about someone’s “football” credentials and why they shouldn’t be there. There will always be someone butthurt over not being one of the four teams picked

Where did she play her college ball? Or high school? Or peewee? Or coach?

I feel like you could just use a computer to statistically pick the best team, giving each team a rating based on wins, strength of schedule, etc…oh wait

Remeber the good ole days when the BCS…o…nev.

If they had to have a female, she is not a bad choice. Extremely smart, well spoken (I am not saying that because she is black)and is a huge fan of football and knows the game better than a lot of men. I guess they could have gone with Hillary Clinton or someone like that.

Whoa now, I think it’s important for the growth of the sport that college football isn’t an all-boys club. Just because she is a woman and thus didn’t have any meaningful opportunity to play shouldn’t preclude her from being involved in administering the game (yes, I realize there are a few women who play but let’s be honest about how common that is). No need to alienate half the population from the game. Besides, women have served on the men’s basketball tournament selection committee and that seems fine.

She has proven that she knows sports. She is apparently highly involved in Stanford athletics and was even considered for the AD position. That’s a big time program, so clearly they believed she knows what she’s doing. I also believe her dad was a football coach, so she grew up around the game. Point being, her experience with athletics (particularly football) and general work ethic and intelligence should make her perfectly capable to do the job.

The only legitimate knock on Condi is that she has her hands in too many pots to do the job. While there is absolutely no doubt in my mind she could be an asset to the selection committee, someone of her stature in national politics simply has so many high-priority obligations that I question if she has the time to do a good job on a football selection committee (which is presumably less important in the grand scheme of things than her other priorities).

So while I also have some reservations about her on the committee, I think your knee-jerk reaction questioning her qualifications without actually looking into it and

I said no such thing. It doesn’t bother me in the least that a woman is there. I do not question her ability, it’s just that her resume doesn’t exactly match up with the other committee members. That’s my major concern. I would honestly think there is a woman somewhere (If they felt they needed a woman on the committee) that had more collegiate athletics experience than her. I’m simply speculating, but if you gave me ten thousand guesses as to who would be on the committee, it would have never been her. I’d think ole Erin Andrews would be there before her… but I don’t know much about sports politics other than the fact that politics should stay out of sports.

I’ll never admit it publically, but apparently me and Frankenstein have similar opinions…

This is the type of resume I’d like to see in that position:

"Mention the name Andrea Kramer to anybody in sports broadcasting, and the reaction will most certainly be positive. Kramer is known for her incredible work ethic and broad range of sports knowledge. She became NFL Films first female producer in 1984. Five years later, she became ESPN?s first female correspondent. A list of Kramer?s career highlights would take up several pages, but at the top of the list, she?s covered 20 Super Bowls and won two Emmy Awards. Andrea Kramer would add experience and a vigorous work ethic to college football?s playoff selection committee. She would work tirelessly to get the selections right.

Fair enough. If your comments about playing peewee football weren’t intended to imply that playing football was a prerequisite, my bad.

I will also happily concede that there are other football qualified women out there for the job. Deborah Yow of NC State immediately comes to mind. I’m sure Kramer would do a good job as well. But just because there are other qualified women doesn’t mean that Condi is unqualified.

I had a reply before I read the rest of the comments and things were already covered.

All of those women would have been good choices too. I just don’t think you have to have that kind of experience to be able to watch football games and pick who you think is the best team. It’s not like she is going to pick the team that she thinks has the best color uniform!

College football is big, but it’s not quantum physics!

I concur, its rather simply when compared to the decisions that Rice has had to make in previous positions, but it still doesn’t mean that her resume is worthy of this committee. The women in that link all have legitimate “football” resumes. That’s all I was looking for.
