Commercial red snapper catch-SC

Is there an open COMMERCIAL season right now?
I ask, because last night there was red snapper on the menu of a well known East Bay restaurant. Staff insisted it was locally caught, not Gulf- even when I questioned it.

Just wondering… Thanks.

Sells would know!

No they’re still closed

Imported from the GOM or South America.

They lie! Red snapper is closed in the south Atlantic. Fish is probably from the Gulf of Mexico, if it is even really red snapper. Because the state refuses to pass a truth in menu law, you never know what you are actually eating.

One more thing, if you really want to bust their balls, call NOAA and report the restaurant. We have a local NMFS agent who sole job is to enforce federal fisheries management laws, including fish markets, restaurants, and recreational fishermen as well. I’m sure he would love to visit the restaurant and ask about their locally caught red snapper. It just might shake them up enough to stop lying about their fish. What is amazing is how every restaurant downtown claims to use local shrimp… Don’t even get me started there

I like that idea Sellsfish, ticks me off when I know a restaurant is feeding me a bold face lie

Could be the supplier lying to the restaurant also.

Vermilion are RED</font id=“red”>…right? My local fish market sells “Red” Snapper, but they are Beeliners for sure.

I’m sorry but if you own a restaurant that hawks “local seafood” it’s your responsibility to know what is or isn’t in season. That’s ludicrous…

This is exactly why I won’t order seafood in restaurants unless it’s sushi lol

“mr keys”

Disgusting. What restaurants can I trust in Mt P? Serious question here.

I’ve seen porgies passed off as red snapper in a certain fish market…I don’t go there anymore.

YOU CAN’T TRUST ANYONE ANYMORE!!!

I was in ocean isle last week and we were out to eat somewhere they also insisted it was local red snapper on the menu. I told the girl it was closed in the Atlantic and she looked at me like I was the liar.

Nearly every restaurant downtown sells Vermillion snapper and calls it red snapper. Most servers don’t know the difference. You should have been able to identify the meat if you ordered the dish. The 2 “Red Snappers” are very different

I think beeliners taste better than ARS anyway. But I seldom order seafood in any restaurant except a good sushi bar.

of which we still have some of your share in our freezer…but I hear you on the “red” or “Red” snapper…I too prefer to eat my seafood at home, knowing exactly where it came from (much of which is from stickman’s boat!!)

There are several species of snapper off our coast that are red - silk, vermillion, red porgy, mangrove, blackfin, yellowtail, mutton, hog, and ARS. Its interesting how the restaurants require a certificate of origin , yet “re name” the fish on their menu. I hope you actually received vermilion snapper. Many use very cheap Asian imports and even pass off swai as grouper! There is one local restaurant group that sells swai (an Asian catfish) as panga grouper. Its a shame that we don’t have a truth in seafood law. Maryland recently passed a law about restaurants selling imported crabmeat and calling it local Maryland crab. We all should take Sells advice and inform NOAA when we get less than we pay for.

I have been trying for years to get that law passed but the hospitality industry is much too strong. Representative goldfinch has written a beautiful law but it keeps getting shelved. Maybe the rest of the people on this board should call state senators and congressmen and demand the truth in menu gets passed

was buying some shrimp off the Geechie dock last week and saw a guy in that little shack away from the main building cleaning what looked to me at a distance to be ARS. I wasn’t sure if ARS season was still closed or if commercial guys had some exemption. It could have been a different species, like some very large vermilion or other similar looking red fish because I was a little distance away and couldn’t get a positive ID. Not accusing this guy of anything, but wasn’t sure if different regs for rec vs commercial.
