yes, the rod will work good for what i intended it for but not good on the surf. it cast really well with just a 4oz weight but add a bait and rig and i lost distance. (didn’t help trying to tune a reel with the wind coming straight at me) I’ve got a 10 or 11 foot Tsunami the reel will work better with on the surf.

I have the same problem, too.

I just retired USAF and really have nothing to do for the next few months.
I suppose I should look for a job, but I really want to take the next 30-40 days and fish … at least 30 days!

Hope the weather holds up!

Izzy,

Two weeks ago, when I was at Sullys, there were a lot of dolphins in the area. Some got real close to the shore too. For you to be spooled that fast, one of two things.

  1. Your Drag broke, but I’m assuming you checked that.
  2. Dolphin took your bait on the run.

It’s about the only thing I could think of that could swim that fast and not think twice about it.

never thought about the fact that dolphins might bite… has anyone ever hooked into one that they know of???

i need to go fishing reallly bad right now. im in a terrible mood

i’ve only known one person to have ever hooked one. they swim by live king baits and never touch them. I dont think it was a dolphin because they go after live bait. we were all using an assortment of cut baits.

Well, if it was on a cut-bait rod…then maybe it was a dolphin sized Red

when the water used to be deeper right at the edge off the wooden jetty at n folly…i saw a guy catch one in a cast net.you know where he ended up right?

75.00 castnet cut to pieces.

sucks for him, ya live, ya learn

I’ve heard their ultrasensitive, high frequency, high resolution sonar pick up the metal hook and they recognize it as unnatural. Consider how many millions of baits, even live, are in the water- and virtually no dolphin ever hooked. I’m sure a rare dolphin, or a handicapped one, can make a mistake. They seem to commit many fewer errors than people.

that makes sense. I’ve seen them many times get very close to live king baits (like 4 to 6 feet) and cruise by and ignore them. The baits always go crazy trying to run away, but the dolphins just pass them by. I still keep a close eye on em to avoid a hookup, but never had one go after a bait.

wasn't a dolphin, there were no none to be seen that day and I don't think they would hit cut shrimp. As far as the drag. I was using a Tica Sportera that has the baitrunner , drag was set almost halfway out, don't trust rod holders that much, just enough for the rod to bend if pulled. Anyway, I'm going back out there this one day this weekend to get my rig back.
