I just started fishing the new shem creek park about a month ago, and in the numerous times i have been there… I have only caught mullet with a cast net… Not even a single bite on my rod w/ live, frozen, or artificial. Fished Pitt street pier today, and again not a single bite but plenty of mullet schooling up.
Anybody else getting skunked like this? I’d like to actually catch some reds, flounder, trout without having to beg my buddy to take his boat out.
Maybe they have moved offshore due to colder water temps? Just a guess based on what I have been reading on this site. I will be upfront in stating that I am pretty much a novice fisherman, especially here in SC.
Still mullet everywhere, though…and I thought that the fish we like to catch tend to hang around the mullet looking for a snack. So some other factor must be driving them away?
There are fish here year round. What I have found, is that as the water gets colder, the reds and trout move into the creeks and disappear from the surf. I have had some great fishing in January for trout, redfish, black drum and sheephead.

That’s good to hear!
I’ve been done with surf fishing for at least a month. I had some success catching red drum between 20-35".
What I am concerned about is that these “piers” I have been visiting are more or less situated over creeks rather than extending beyond the surf like folly beach pier.
my lucks been varying from day to day on a cooper river pier. yesterday i got 2 nice reds and a small trout. today was the skunk. been like that the past week where 1 day i get a pile of trout and or reds and another day im happy with a single small trout or a missed fish. only way to catch em is to be there fishing though dont give up!
Have you tried Bowen’s Island. Its on the way to Folly. There was another fire there recently, so I don’t know if the dock was damaged there. It can be hit or miss, but there is some pretty deep water there, along with oysters, a creek mouth, and rail bed all attracting fish.
I was just out kayak fishing at off Bowens today. I caught nothing but there was a group of guys fishing off the pier. In the time it took us to unload of kayaks and get in the water they pulled up 5 trout. They were using shrimp. I couldn’t tell if they were live or frozen.
