Fishermen have not always been known for their fashion of dress and appearance. One of my father’s favorite things to tell people was in order to catch fish you could not wear matching clothing. Old shorts, a worn out t-shirt and a pair of old shoes were all you needed. This lack of fashion sense was even more evident in the style of sunglasses fishermen wore. I still get a chuckle out of pictures of Roland Martin wearing those huge sunglasses that looked more like a welder’s mask. When a buddy of mine out-fished me while wearing a pair of those goofy glasses, wading for redfish one day, I quickly realized while hideous in appearance they were essential for spotting fish in the shallows, and yes I ended up buying a pair. While old Roland wore his with pride, I chose to wear mine only when we were well away from the landing and on our way to the fishing spot. Well times have changed and the number of people fishing and the type of people fishing has changed dramatically. Fishermen now wear expensive (matching) clothing, drive expensive boats and thank goodness, wear fashionable sunglasses. Over the last several years companies like, Costa Del Mar, Ocean Waves and Ray Ban, to name a few, have recognized this change and have put a tremendous amount of effort into designing glasses that are lightweight, comfortable, polarized, and fashionable. At the same time these glasses also block UV rays that can cause permanent damage to your eyes. There are plenty of companies that boast their sunglasses are the absolute best, but there are a few things you need to look for when choosing the right pair for you. In order to make this decision, it is helpful to know a few things about what you are looking for.

UV protection should be one of your first concerns when choosing a pair of sunglasses. Ultraviolet Rays are one of the most dangerous types of solar radiation. Studies have shown that the eye absorbs ultraviolet rays and that the rays can be quite damaging to the human eye
