I rented a house on big bay the first week of June and had to return a few days early…My relatives came back on Monday 6/6 and left my pot in the creek down past the marinas on the right before the mouth of big bay…It has the long red and white float with my name somewhat faded in permanent marker…if anyone would just be kind enough to pull it out I would be greatful…

Last year, I had two occasions in BB Creek where my pot was checked and either relocated a couple hundred yards down stream or on the opposite side from where I put it. Noticed commercial pots were gone so I figured they didn’t like me in their water. I find other areas now. One people are sorry and no good u-know whats. Probably same folks who left their trash on Otter Island last week.
I will be out and look for it tomorrow. It sounds like you mean between the marina and the sound?
If you put your pots anywhere near commercial pots they will usually pull your traps and open the top or move your pots to let you know not to do that.

Yes it was on the right between the marinas and the sound, there weren’t any other pots in that location when it was put out…Scared to think what might be in it now if is still there…thanks for all the help guys
I can promise both of you that the two commercial guys down here are not touching your pots. It’s a waste of their time and puts their license in jeopardy. The only people who mess with pots(both yours and the commercial guys) are the occasional lazy recreational people and home owners that think they own an expansive area around their dock. When there are big tides like this you’re traps are just dragging. That’s why the commercial guys use double rebar.
There is no trap in that location. I found this up big bay near EWT. Judging from the slime looks like it has been there a long time and there is no name so I don’t think it is yours.

Ya a lot of people assume their traps are being stolen, but very often there is not enough weight and the tide drags them to deep water and the float gets submerged. Big bay has some hellacious tides…

I am sure that is true of most commercial crabbers. I live here and put my traps in the same half dozen places and have for years. No real problems. Set in one of my normal spots up Scott creek. Admittedly was between a commercial string but far enough away from his pots that I thought it was ok. Came back and the pot was in same spot with the top open. Figured I had forgotten to fasten so I rebaited and dropped in same spot. Two days later same thing. Moved the trap away and no problem and have set in that spot once commercial pots were gone with no problem. Seems like quite a coincidence.

I don’t think that is it with all the growth, the float is the right color but in awful bad shape…last time the nephews put it out, they said it was accross from the marinas on the right heading out…Thanks for trying,i really appreciate it…

That happens to the comerical guys a good bit. Again the culprit is unfortunately the lazy recreation people.

Edisto,I don’t think I ever mentioned a word about a commercial crabber having anything to do with my pot being left in the creek…The issue wasn’t whether it was stolen at all… I had to leave on short notice, I was told the pot would be picked up and took it for granted it would… When I realized it hadn’t, I just thought someone down that way might retrieve it so it would not just sit there killing crab.
How commercial folks got brought into this is beyond my control…
I apologize if I ruffled any feathers,I just thought it would be best to get the pot out of the water no matter where it ended up…
In no way was I referring to your initial statement. Just saw what smoakin and fortunate son mentioned about comerical guys emptying/moving their pots. No feathers were ruffled on my end just wanted to make sure they knew there was no need to worry about the two comerical guys on Edisto.
That’s what I figured. I will keep an eye out for it and PM you if I see it. Sorry about the trap. Those things aren’t cheap.

I looked today fairly extensively. No luck.
Thanks for everyone’s help I hope the pot is out of the water. … lesson learned,at my age I should know better.
Good on you for caring and trying to recover a ghost trap. No telling how long it may be be around killing crabs. Some people wouldn’t lose a minutes sleep over it, but it would drive me nuts. Hopefully somebody pulled it.

I’ll be out today and tomorrow and will keep an eye out for it.
