Crab Pot Thieves

Went down to Cherry Point Landing this morning around 11:00 to do my usual thing, launch the boat and go directly across from the ramp on Bohicket Creek and drop my pots…Then I went out to the Botony Bay area and fished for some shark for about 3 hours…nothin’…Oh well I almost always will have a couple of pots full of crab anyway.Came back and they were gone! Some lowlife took my pots, hope the fishin’ Gods will pay him back. Anybody else have this experiance???

Next time you are out, check in the surrounding areas. This happened to me over the summer and I was pissed. The next day I went back to check my other trap in the area and happen to glance at some of the bouys I was passing an ‘found’ my lost one. Seems as though someone grabbed my pot and emptied it while driving away. They just threw it back in when they were done stealing my crabs and was about 100 yds away from where I put it.

another thing that could have happend was the trap moved with the tides. With the really big tides we were having last week your pots could have eaisly been pushed away by the cuurent. It happens more then you woould think. I have some friends that crab commerically down here and it happens to them when the tide is running like it was last week.

It very well just moved with the currents. I have 5/8" rebar around the bottoms of mine and have had them move with a large tide 200 yrds. I’ve noticed the commercial guys use 3/4". I added a brick to mine last time and it helped. If float goes under its moving!

If you’re so ■■■■ smart - why ain’t ya rich?

Whoooo - Fish ON!

200 yards is nothing… I’ve had traps a quarter mile from where they started. a solid piece of rebar is important but what I’ve found is the length of your line makes all the difference. we put at least 100 ft of line on every trap. the bouy spends less time pulling on the trap.

Here is an update on the crab pot thieves…Fellas you were right!!!Went back to that spot a few weeks ago and found one of my pots! It was almost a half-mile away from its origanal spot…Next time they will have more weight and longer line! Thanks for the help and info!!!

i’ve had that same thing happen with the people e82 was talking about. they left pots way back in a gutter and found them in the middle of the channel half a mile away. You’d never think something that’s such a pain in the ass to pull up would drift so easily.
