Not sure if this is the proper place to post this but here i go , my family and i are thinking of renting a vacation spot on Daufuskie next summer and it looks like that most of the rental property is on the ocean side of the island , we are going to take our boat to the island from Charleston , my question is will it be safe to leave my boat at the marina , “locked and secured” overnight and what are the facilities at the marina , any kind of info about that area and some rental property would be helpful. Thanks

I did this summer. I actually left it at the defunct resort’s dock. That dock isn’t in the best shape and have a gelcoat repair that I owe my boat, from an exposed nail head. I didn’t have any trouble at all. It isn’t in a location that a lot of traffic seemed to come by. The island is as peaceful as anything I’ve ever done. I loved it and will likely go back next summer.
The restaurants aren’t that great, very island bar kind of food. I didn’t eat at all of them and I think I left the expensive one out, which I hear is really good. We really just didn’t have a plan and never ran across it.
We had a time with the golf carts, rented from Daufuskie adventures out of Savannah. We were going to arrive late on a mid-week night, so we were kind of an odd customer. They said it would be no problem to keep the key in it and no matter what time we got there, it’d be waiting. The key wasn’t in it. It had our name on it, but no key. It was about 10:30pm and no one would answer the phone. We walked, with a 13 year old and a 1.5 year old, carrying the bare minimum. It was sooo hot and soooo muggy, was terrible. I called every 15minutes of our 2 mile walk. As you would expect, they answered as we walked up to our condo. They came by truck right then, took me back to the boat, loaded our stuff and a golf cart on to a trailer and brought me back. It was about 2:30am before it was over. I wouldn’t say that made me happy, but it gave me a perspective on the rest of the week. I don’t know if the week was as relaxing as I remember, or if my first day calibrated me to how bad things can be. The rest of the week was really smooth.
Relaxing on the completely empty beach with ghost crabs running by you, dolphin swimming by excites the kids, looking out over Calibogue, watching the shrimp boats come/go.
Marinas are limited, depending on where you stay. As btodag said, the resort on the south end at Bloody Point is bankrupt, or was the last I heard, but the marina is still there. There is a municipal dock that isn’t too swift, no facilities, and often full.
The Haig Point Plantation on the north end has a pretty good marina, but private except for guests. They do have rental properties so that might be the best bet. You can even rent the lighthouse
Freeport Marina is decent have some guest houses also. I don’t know if they would let you keep your boat there unless staying there.
Crime is not an issue on Daufuskie. No need to worry about that.

Freeport is kind of high to leave the boat there, for me at least. I think they said $3/ft, looks like another $60/night +30 or so for the golf cart. It starts to add up but is an awesome place to hang for a while.
Aside from the cost , is the docking area in good shape. Can you rent your golf cart when you get there or should you have that done in advance. What about your personal items , luggage, coolers will they fit on the carts. I know i have alot of questions but i’m all about details.

You can rent from freeport when you get there they have one available. I’d rent before. Three hooks cats are typically front and back seaters, without luggage racks or anything like that. We just piled it up in or layouts on the way back and even had it stacked up on top. One trip for 3.5 peoples worth. I’d have the cart squared away when you get there.
