Daufuskie Questions - An Annual Thing For Me

I’ve just secured the place that we stayed last year in Melrose Plantation on Daufuskie. I’m pretty stoked. It was the best vacation I’ve ever had and now my son is 2.5 years old and I know he’ll love it. I’ll be needing a golf cart and dockage again this year. I’ve got a 22’ Sea Hunt that I docked at the resort’s dock last year, but it wasn’t in business and was kind of free-for-all. What’s the status of that dock?

Anyone have a hook up on a golf cart or dock out there? I’d love to pay somebody’s aunt or uncle for use of their dock for the week. I’ll sign waivers…

Also, the pool out in Melrose Plantation, what’s the best way to get access to that w/o paying a ridiculous amount? Last year I think my wife was paying like $30/each to go there for a few hours… I had to school her on the value of the $ after finding that out.

Any other tips/tricks?

I lived on Dafuskie for a summer and loved it!! Cant help with the rentals but I love that place!! Good luck and enjoy your trip!!

We went last year when work had been quite hectic and it was the perfect local get away. We got the same place again this year, so I’m stoked. I’ve got one pm about a dock and a cart that I hope works out. Keep them coming though. Know anyone, send them my info:

Be there 7/14-21.

Also, still listening for pool access tips. She’s going to break me paying to get the little guy in to the pool.
Thanks.

Patrick Ford @ Bloody Point Golf Course. Trails from Melrose lead to Bloody Point and he recently had a new dock put in this year.

If you dont mind shoot me the information about where you stay in Melrose. May be something different to do.

Fatty I sent you an email from the link above your post, hopefully you’ll get it. I’ll call Patrick today.

I know it’s a late reply, but just in case someone else is curious here’s my two cents. We have stayed out there 3 times already this year and we always keep the boat at the old Daufuskie Island Ferry dock. It’s still in pretty bad shape (loose boards, missing cleats, etc.) but it beats the heck out of fighting for a space next door at Freeport Marina. If you call him a day in advance, there’s a guy on the island who will pick you up at the dock. His name is Ody (Oh-dee) and if you throw him a few bills he’ll take you and your luggage wherever you need to go. We usually stay at the same VRBO at Melrose.

I was told if you call ahead a few days in advance they will have a spot for you at Freeport marina.

Freeport is close to renting a hotel to keep your boat price wise.

I think I’ve got cart nailed down for a reasonable price from Bloody Point, but the dockage still isn’t figured out. The dock over at Bloody Point is not approved for overnight dockage and there’s no wink, wink in there. Got to respect it. So, I’m still looking for the right dock. I did leave it at the resort’s dock Last Mango is talking about last year but it was iffy then. Got at least one gouge out of the deal from a nail head that was just perfect. I also don’t feel wonderful about squatting these days. I’ve kind of grown out of it I guess. To be honest, I’ve probably squatted myself to my lifetime limit already…

I’d love to pay someone to let me use their family’s dock. Someone has to know the right person.

Also, any tips on getting entry to the pool?

Why don’t you rent a place on the Haig Point Plantation instead? They have a dock, they have golf cart rentals, they have a pool…heck, you can even rent a room in the lighthouse. I did a job over there for about 6 months and stayed at Haig Point, it’s pretty sweet :sunglasses:

We are staying at Sandy Lane for the 4th keeping the boat at Freeport , i know it’s a little pricy but i like the sound of mind knowing my boat is secure and i can ride back and forth with the cart to check on it any time.

Just to put a cap on this trip…
We got here in the middle of the remnance of Chantal, but it was light drizzle and large patches of sun. Put the wind shield up and everyone was happy.

Went around back to Bloody Point to pick up a cart we’d rented. They were great, very nice and hospitable. The cart was super slow, like you’d expect from a golf course. Dinner menu here looks great. We’ll have to try it.

My wife drove the cart over to the Melrose dock that was a free-for-all last year and I met her there on the boat. There were no trespassing signs with a number that said call for rates. We called just to be on the up and up. They said they technically could not charge us and to go ahead and dock there and to have a good week.

The pool is the spot at Melrose. It is a wonderful area, but pricey. This is a point to be figured out. With a 2 year old, the wife can’t be w/o a pool and this one is nice but she’s killin’ me paying as much as we did. There’s a weekly discount that’ll put two adults over a bill to go everyday and my kid is young enough to be free. The strawberry daquiri that my wife scored rang up as $10. Have to bring the supplies with us tomorrow.

Everything this year is much much more busy than last year. The number of cars here this year has increased 20x I’d bet. Been here 2 days and I’m sure I’ve seen a car 30x where last year I’m sure there was a day that I didn’t at all. Beach is much more crowded, we saw as many as 15 people out there this morning. Last year, I sent a buddy a pic of a girl 400 yards away and said the beach “packed today.” Today I was behind 5 golf carts in my slow-azz cart and sent my wife a pick saying traffic was bad and I’d be home late.

Everyone has been great, it is just more crowded.

I’m going to hit Mungens creek in the morning, anchor up in the inland mouth because it seems like it’d have to produce fish, such a small opening with flats on either side. We’ll see.

Oh, also enticed an 8’ gator on the other side of a pond to launch itself into the tall grass chasing pine cones that we were throwing, Right out of national geographic. That was exciting. We were 30 yards away on the other side of a pond.
