Dealing with current when using a Carolina rig

I wanted to share something I’ve done for years that helps a lot when fishing current, esp. when you get crazy tides.

Just pound your egg sinkers flat using a hammer, on the concrete. A steel substrate works better (like an anvil) but I usually just use the sidewalk.

I have a small metal rod that I have no idea where I got it, but I spray it with WD40, or lithium grease (whatever grease is handy). Insert it into the sinker, let it just barely poke out the other side (so you aren’t having to pull a lot of rod out). Hammer the sinker flat, use pliers to pull out the rod. You also don’t need to “pancake” the sinker. Just flatten it out some. The whole point is to keep it from rolling.

Expect to mess up a sinker here and there, sometimes they do split, but you’ll get the hang of it.

The flat sinkers stay low in the sand and they don’t roll. I usually use 1 ounce or 2 ounce sinkers.

Also note, I’m sure you can buy these already made this way, but I make my own sinkers, and I don’t have a mold that makes flat slip sinkers, but I do have a hammer that does :slightly_smiling_face:.

That’s a good tip and much cheaper than having to buy sinker slides that constantly snap when I’m fishing with pyramids.

I’m so salt life I sued google earth for giving away all of my fishing spot’s.

nice tip. Off to the garage!

If you’re pouring your own flatten some right out the mold while their hot. Won’t be as likely to split and takes a lot less hammer blows.

I’d rather fish than eat.

A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.

Taz is absolutely right. It is easier if they are hot.

I never fret the ones that split since I just remelt them, so y’all need to save any that split and give’m to me so I can make myself some more sinkers lol.

cool tip, thanks!

Alot of catfishermen use “no roll sinkers” you can buy them at most online tackle shops and im pretty sure you can get a mold for them ifya wanna make your own.
