Deep Hole Shrimping Sonar View

Struggling to find the deep hole shrimp on my sonar. Have a small color Garmin set at 70-75% gain, dual, 2 or 4 zoom on bottom and no to limited noise reduction. Can anyone describe what they will look like and what settings they use. A screen shot would be awesome but that’s asking a lot I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

On my Humminbird they show up as small blue hashmarks just above the bottom. I don’t use any special settings. It looks like this…

On Garmin they will be red and green strings/strands sticking straight up off of the bottom. Will stick up pretty good off of the bottom when you’re on them thick.

I believe they will show-up differently, depending upon which sonar unit you have. I have a Lowrance HDS7, and they show-up as “blue” fine specks on the bottom. When the current is running hard, the bottom may just appear rough (shrimp are hugging the bottom). Lots of shrimp and very little current they will appear almost as a cloud. Settings such as: Sensitivity, Color-line, Pallette, Depth, and noise reduction will also affect your projected view.

My suggestion is that when you see folks on shrimp, and they are catching shrimp, then get with the boat next to you, see what they look like on their screen, and then see what they look like on your screen. I have had several folks do this with me.

Deep Holing can be very rewarding. I have filled 2/3rds of a cooler in 3 throws before. Good Luck!

Dear Chris… this is James Swift. I would be happy to help you find some of those elusive deep hole shrimp if you ever need some help. Give me a call if you ever have an open spot on board!

Most likely not able to see shrimp on your screen because the shrimp have not been very thick most of the time this year. At least not the few times I have looked. When they are there they are easy to sppt.

I forgot, the best bottom machine for deep hole shrimping is to watch another boat pull their net up and see what they caught.
