Anyone have experience surf fishing Deveaux Bank island on the mouth of the North Edisto River? Any recommendations?
Yeah pompano, whiting, blues, sharks and something huge that pops line is what i have caught the few times i fished there. Heard of tarpons and large sharks around there be careful because the waves pick up quick out there and there are some sandbars. Also have seen bit in half dolphins on the beach which means huge sharks and had about a 6 ft shark swim up to me and turn around in about 3-4ft of water when I was pushing the boat out. Also be aware that you are only allowed on certain spots of deveaux bank so read the signs its a bird sanctuary and walking in a nesting area is a hefty fine. You also have botany bay and Fripp inlet around there which I’ve heard good things bout but not fished.
I have caught more whiting and shark, but I know folks who do well with Tarpon. I don’t target any of the above. Do NOT try it this weekend…
Thanks for the responses; I need a few more.
Soon as you come out the river we beach the boat on the point closest to the mainland. We always use cut shrimp and fish but have also caught fish on mudminnows out there too. I wouldn’t try it with a north or northeast wind. Use caution when out there the bars shift and move. Check the restriction on where you can go. Take your tent and plenty beer. Sometimes we take a small gas grill. Put on some big cutbait and hold on. That’s all I got in a nutshell
Thank you very much
My son and I have caught some nice/large sharks there with live and cut bait (Mullet and Mens). The Mens are thick there on occasion and always have larger fish feeding on the ball. Good
Thanks, Keep the comments coming.
Amen to all the above comments.
- BE CAREFUL! Currents/Holes/Sharks Etc
- Light tackle is great for the kids because of all the Whiting/Pompano etc. but be prepared to wipe some tears as they will lose something big that normally will spool light tackle in less than a minute!
- Big tackle is great too! Just don’t leave your rod unattended!
- Good Luck! Keep us updated.
