So i took in everyones info and created my own redfish rigs. Tell me what you guys think and if they will work okay. I made one with 40lb mono and one version with 90lb steel just incase the sharks start biting me off. Also im still unsure of what size peice of whiting i should use and how to hook it.
Looks pretty good. For sure shorten the leader down to 6"-8" max. With your average Whiting, cut the head off, use it for Shark Bait if you want. Cut it into steaks about 3/4-1". Usually you can get 3-5 baits.
Also consider a “rub leader” above the weight, I keep mine about 30"-35". A big’ol Red will tail whip your braid, it will fail.
Lots of way’s to do them. The first red rig is 60lb mono/a number 5 owner off-set circle hook. The second shark rig 4-ft 400lb mono/2 ft 400lb steel with a #10 owner circle hook casting rig. I Like pyramid sinkers when possible. The only time I use a weight with legs is if absolutely necessary. They tend to get tangled sometimes. The 90 lb steel you are using will catch allot of sharks, but won’t be enough for some. On the red rig the coast lock swivel will allow you to put on whatever kind of pre-maid liter you want. Sometimes I put on smaller rig for catching bait, then cut it up and put on a heavier rig for chunking out for reds. It gives you options without having to carry so many poles and tie so many rigs. You have 1 rod that can be used for bait catching then switch the rig and can use the same rod for a heavy red set up. If I have caught mullet in the cast net sometimes I will just use a regular swivel and not put on the coast lock. No need for switching the rigs you already have bait. You should PM Folly Fisher for help on shark set ups/rigs. He is a nice enough fellow and has helped me with questions in the past. 40 inch red as well. When it comes to fish David Parker is an excellent person to get advice from. He uses a completely different rig and whoops me day in and day out. Join us for the Military Appreciation Day(MAD) surf fishing trip in November. Great chance to meet your fellow surf fishers and to give back to our hard working soldiers. Basically we all hop on a ferry boat together and take the soldiers fishing out to a barrier island. It is a blast. The folks from MAD will post allot of info on the event in a couple of weeks. Take care Stevo, keep at it wanting it is half the battle and you seem to have plenty of determination. Well crap the photos won’t load it say’s they are to large. If I can figure out how to make them smaller I will get them up. Don’t know why it’s doing that loaded them on here before.
Looks like Mr. Parker and I typed at same time.Stevo going to have to try to get those pics up later, got to make some chicken Marsala.
I will def shorten the leader on the mono one. I actually just made the 90lb steel test one not slecifically for sharks but just to keep fishing for reds if theres small sharks about so im not losing tackle. I actually make my own shark rigs now the one pictured with the green beads i make for my drone to drone out a whole whiting. And the other ones i bought a couple years back to cast with. I actually havnt had much luck shark fishing cant seem to find the big ones i caught my biggest one just a week ago on that small 90lb test fishing for stingrays. If someone could point me to a good spot to shark fish that would be great. So far im fishing around station 19 and 20 on sullivans since it seems to not be as crowded.
Let me see if this loads. My pooter is working again:smiley:

…short leader, fixed weight…been using them for years.
The two I use.
I can take a pic of mine tonight, but I agree with D. My leader to hook is only like 4 inches but I make sure i have almost 2-3 feet of mono (#50) as a shock leader. The times I have gone without the leader, the braid was hit (#30) and snapped. Was it a red or shark? I don’t know, but it wasn’t frayed so not teeth.

Mr. Owen Lupton does make some valid points. " I started out with a short leader at 12 inches and each inch I shortened the leader resulted in fewer fish swallowing the circle hook. If the sound fishing was from SHORE or SURF, rather than an anchored boat, then it might not make so much a difference. Here we fish by boat and keeping a tight line is next to impossible."
