On two recent occasions I have seen a fellow diving from his pontoon boat in the Whale Branch River—most recently this past Saturday afternoon. He anchors about 1/4 mile east of the highway 21 bridge. I drifted over that area last summer and marked a deep hole. Any idea what he is diving for in that area?
megaladon shark teeth?

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.
sharks teeth, pottery, old bottles, whale bones… all kinds of stuff down there
Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■. I had thought about sharks teeth, but did not know if there was anything else special about that area.
Gamecock Trophy case maybe?
Not sure if it is related to the diver, but during the civil war (or war of northern aggression) the Yankees came up into the Whale Branch and were firing at the Confederates from barges with mortars (squat cannons).
Also the Yankees were picketed on Seabrook side, while the Confederates were picketed on both Lobeco side and Sheldon side and they were probably lobbing stuff at each other. No telling how many cannon balls are sitting on the bottom out there as well as a possible sunk barge.

What everyone else said, think I may have met your diver at greys hill landing. If so he also works some areas around little barnwell island and in the Broad. He looks for hard bottom where heavier items settle. ton’s of fossils, Indian artifacts, and civil war stuff as others suggested. If it’s the same guy he also dives up and down the edisto river.
that same hole holds shrimp:wink: you’ll see a few boats throwing a net when the temps cool off.

Good historical information digger54. And the video that Larry posted will make you have second thoughts about diving off the dock for a refreshing dip in the river!
Most likely Sea Island Divers as they dive from a pontoon and it definitely megaldon shark teeth and bones. Check their Facebook page. The stuff they get is amazing

Here is where you get those wonker chompers…and how we do it…
The last one I found in the video brought $450…one tooth covered the dive expenses for that weekend.
the other teeth I picked up covered room, board, travel, college payments.

Neat video, but you won’t have that kind of clarity around here.

I heard coast guard reporting missing diver yesterday while on the N Edisto. Also heard them report they located him so I thought it was going to be a lucky day for them. Hate to hear about this story.
Usually pretty shallow diving in these rivers. Low viz is an issue but working strong currents can induce heart attacks etc.
