If they make all deer hunting “catch and release”, then the problem will be solved… Essentially, you hunt with tranquilzer darts. When the deer falls asleep, you crouch down beside it for a picture or two. Get some measurements of it’s head and then send it to Grey’s taxidermy for a replica.

I don’t think that is the case.
I know a lot of both, and to date I know some still hunters that take a lot more deer a year than dog hunters.
Think about a dog club and say 15 standers and only killing 3 or 4 deer a hunt. Then a single still hunter taking one an afternoon or every weekend. adds up.
To a lot of unknowing people killing a deer being chased by dogs is not near as easy as a nice slow steady brace shot from a rifle. Some areas are plain impractical to still hunt. That “boring” easy shot from a rifle has turned a lot of hunters to the Bow.

Originally posted by DeerHunterI’m for tagging all deer! But I believe hunters should have the option to buy additional tags if they plan to shoot more deer…another option would be “swapping” a coyote for an additional tag (create an incentive to shoot the rascals).
No one has explained how the tags will be enforced. Will DNR set up check stations? Will DNR camp out at or check coolers at processors? And what about these hunt clubs with their own walk-in coolers? My family tags our turkeys and does, but no one has ever stopped us to check. Is there a belief the deer doggers are the force against the tags?
Limiting tags typically goes hand in hand with harvest requirements so the “if you want more” thing won’t fly. You can’t say, “you can only kill 5 deer…but if you want to kill more, you can ask for more tags.” Kind of defeats the purpose.
As far as “no one explaining” things, go to the meetings and I’m sure this will be “explained.” Granted, there will be no guarantee of comprehension by some in the audience.
No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.
some people depend on the meat they kill, and need to harvest enough to feed other family members as well as their dogs
5 deer goes far if it’s just for you, not so far if you’re helping fill other family members refrigerators as well
believe it or not, not everyone has the money to run down to BiLo for meat and even BiLo has become BiHi…
you will just have those that are in actual need killing deer without tags, I killed a good size deer two days ago but that meat will barely last a month in my household
it isn’t always just about the guy that’s playing in the woods, who can just run to the store and buy a steak instead
and then the farmers… they gut shoot so the deer run off somewhere else and die on purpose, so they don’t die on top of their crops and because that used to actually be part of the permit requirements, DNR didn’t want you harvesting them for meat and wanted them gut shot to make sure they ran off from you so as not to create that incentive… things have changed and now people are harvesting those too,to eat

bangstick - since this forum is routinely frequented by educated outdoorsman, I was hoping to hear from someone with insight into the plans our Dept. of Nature Resources has for enforcing the new tagging system. As I am sure you are aware, the meetings begin in Florence tomorrow, but we are discussing this now. Hence, I was inquiring if anyone knows ?the plan?.
The proposal is for 4 buck tags and 4 doe tags = 8 deer. Other family members can get a license and tags too.

He’s a dog driver; don’t try to pull logic out of this. They don’t respond well to logic.

So these people who shoot deer to feed their families, what in the hell do they eat from Jan 2-Aug 14?

Yeah, I’ve heard the “if we don’t hunt/kill, we don’t eat” excuse before too.
Skinnee, they eat the dogs if they have a bad year, duh!
Poly, who’s to say their hunting season starts on 8/15 and ends on 1/1…?

If it’s truly that bad (and not just an excuse to shoot as many deer as you want), contact your local FHFH chapter.

This is a great program and, in my opinion, is extremely under-utilized in SC.

If they are so poor that they rely on venison, how do they afford guns and ammo?
Or Internet service to post on public forums about how they can’t afford to shop for food at a grocery store.

What about the veterinarian and food bill for taking care of a pack of dogs? You can buy a lot of top ramen with that cash…
And, then there is that whole lease thing…

I know a lot of hunters and I honestly can say I know not one that hunts for the sole purpose of providing meat for a family. If you do pass the name on and I can probably help them if in that bad a need. If you are worried new regulations will starve out your dogs and family I don’t think you need to let that worry you. Let’s say a family of 5 work together for a deer harvest. That’s 40 deer that can be taken legally.
As to farmers gut shooting deer, that doesn’t happen much and certainly not because dnr tells them to. Besides those deer would never be made available to you any way.
I gotta say you are the first person I ever heard say that they depend on deer meat to feed dogs. when I don’t t
