Do fish feel pain...

http://www.slate.com/id/2219276/?gt1=38001

Every time I hear this, I wonder, “if not me, then some other big toothed fish is going to make them feel pain for a moment, so why not me?”

If these people are so concerned with fish not feeling pain, why are they not trying to do something to stop other animals from eating them? I mean, if the pain of the fish is the only focus, why not try to keep all of them from feeling it? I’m a part of the food chain on this earth, and I’m going to have to kill something to eat meat, just like every other animal with that instinct, and yes, the nerve endings in their bodies are going to send pain messages to their brain. That’s how God designed us. UGH!!! This is so silly.

EDIT: I don’t mean to knock the author, I’m commenting on the people he is commenting on.

I think it’s interesting but it’s not going to stop me from fishing. Thought someone on here would want to read it.

Great question to ask on the peta forum, haha!

Here’s a couple of random thoughts on the subject…

Have you ever been stuck by a fishes fin…let’s say a pinfish for instance or a hardshell crab would not be fun to catch with your mouth…with all those pain receptors and soft pallet…well a fish is designed to eat these prickly critters and it would be kinda a cruel joke on them to have the same pain receptors as us softer folks…and why don’t they bleed when a hook penetrates their mouth? You know we would…maybe they are somehow designed differently than we…

…and have you ever heard of someone who has been shot and didn’t know it even though they have perfectly good pain receptors before getting shot…even though we feel pain…when it’s bad enough trauma…we don’t always feel it…maybe it’s the same for our finned friends when they get slashed by another fish or when we dress their tasty arses up…food for thought.

When fish start paying taxes, raise their kids to 18, and have to go to jail when they kill their own, I will then be concerned about how much pain they feel…

I hope so, otherwise why am I beating them with a bat?

I think fish feel pain…they hate the hook, they avoid dangerous spines of sea urchins and typically try to avoid bumping in to stuff - it must smart some or else they’d always run into structure, reefs and each other.

They feel discomfort, that’s why you’ll see big fish on cleaning stations on reefs or why larger fish will tolerate smaller fish pecking on them. When a mimic takes a bite of a big fish - the fish flinch and scoot away.

But the question is, do they understand the pain or have a conscience effort to avoid pain? I don’t think so.

Do they have fear of pain. Probably not.

Do they fear death? I don’t think they understand death, but have the instinct to do what is necessary to survive like avoid being eaten or get off the hook when caught.

Do they experience residual pain after a hook is removed? Maybe, but it probably depends on how bad they were injured. But a robust fish probably recovers real quick.

Do fish have dreams?

Don’t know and I don’t care. When properly prepared they taste yummy.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Pain is nothing more than a response to a stimulus that the brain uses to signal “danger”… Every species of animal has the instinct to avoid danger and to survive. If they didn’t, they go extinct. But their brains are so small and they do not have the full capacity to experience pain the same way that we do. Just like you don’t experience smell the same way that your dog does, or echo-location the same way a dolphin does or a bat hunting with sonar at night, or heat the way that a pit viper does while tracking prey… Even though we can sense heat, smell, sounds, etc, we experience it in a much different way.

I think that any human that thinks that fish mentally and emotionally experience pain the same way humans do needs to be locked up, as they are likely a danger to society, and possibly themselves…

I’ve only seen a few in doctor’s offices but they were hanging on the wall…yaeah, yeah I know… I think they feel pain from watching sea anenomes, reactions from being stuck with object. If they don’t feel it, they at least react to it. I don’t think cudas feel a thing because I used to test their tolerance.

Do fish sleep?

I think they sorta do…not really sleep but something close to it.

When doing night dives, we’d often see fish hidden back in ledges and holes and you could get really close to them as they were apparently resting. Parrot fish would envelop themselves in a slime bubble and be nearly motionless. But even in their kinda sleepy state, you still could not just swim up and grab a sleeping fish.

It was interesting…there were day fish and then there were night fish cruising the reefs.

Genesis 1:26 is probably a Bible verse that PETA folks love to hate.

Luke 8:22-25

Whenever my wife hooks a fish she always looks the fish in the face and very sweetly says to it, “I’ll bet you are releived that I am here to take that hook out of your mouth, aren’t you?”
