I bought a depthfinder today for my kayak/jon boat. Its a portable eagle cuda 128. Got a great deal on it, so I was excited. I was messing around with it in the living room today, and had my wires out. Went to get a drink and came back and my puppy had chewed completely through the wire going from the fishinder unit to the transducer. Its about 3" up from the 'ducer so that part will be underwater no matter what. Is there any way I can fix it or get it fixed!?!? I don’t even know if its possible to purchase another cord because the units are out of production.
Repair is out of the question. Even if soldered perfectly it probably will never work right. If the transduecer will unplug from the depth finder then you can probably find a new one online. Its still probably cheaper to find a whole new unit.
Get some small diameter shrink tube for the individual strands and 1 big piece with the glue inside that releases when heated. That glue oozes out, guaranteed water tight. Use a good quality solder like kester 44, tin your ends, and solder it up.
I have all the stuff here at the house. If you want, shoot me a PM and I will give you my number. It would only take a few mins to fix it up.
It’ll work, it just won’t work as well. The shielding in the original cable is the problem. It absorbs interference from being introduced into the signal. I hope it works as good as new.

You are right but he really doesn’t have much to lose, that’s why I suggested it. He is a paddler so the interference normally caused by an ignition system shouldn’t be an issue. I have repaired a lot of J1939 data links in diesels before without issue. A confirmation with a scope is easy to see if you have a dirty signal.
Normally, I would have said the same but I know his situation and would be more than willing to help him out in exchange for slave labor buffing my boat.
Yakman I would not worry about the shielding on it. After all you are going to use it on the Yak. I’m thinking all you’r goingto have is the battery that powers it or does it work on flashlight batteries?
Double A batteries easy. Since its portable I wanted to be able use it on a jon boat also. Any other other offers besides mattR so I don’t have to buff a boat?

If you’d prefer sanding a boat, I can fix it for you

If we work this right, we could both benefit. I will get half of it done and “run out” of solder after my boat is buffed. He will then have to sand your boat to finish the job.
Yakman, I like your style. Matt made you a good offer, but if that doesn’t work out for whatever reason, or you get tired of waxing his boat:smiley:, mail it to me I will fix it for you for free. Have it back to you in a week.

Must have been a pit bull that snapped and did that [:0] Sorry, I don’t have any extra flush mount cleats. Shouldn’t keep pit bulls I hear, never know when they might go nuts and eat all your cleats

Cracker, if that’s how it works, I have a 69 Road Runner with a 4 speed and big ass tires on back and glass packs! It goes like hell from gas station to gas station. Now how’s that for style? Now, will you fix my VHF for free?
Yak, if all you’ve got to do is wax a boat, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Sounds like they all have lots for you to learn from and for that alone it would be worth it. I would be glad to fix it as well, but I’m a long way up I26 from folly. Take in everything you can from these guys.
I wouldn’t have actually made him wax my boat. I did that last week. The wheel bearings need repacked though…
Easy, do you really have a Road Runner? I am a Mopar guy and love their classics. I want a Duster and to build a 440 for it. My 05 Ram dyno’d 616whp and maxed the tq at 1200 ft lbs. I catch a lot of Mustangs and Camaros off guard.
Once I am done putting my wife through college I am going to get a classic Mopar to build.
