Double up docking AKA rafting????????

Question… Had a guy jump my bones when we were docked at California Dreaming this weekend. His son was the inside boat and my buddy was the outside tied to his. My buddy told the guy its HIS responsibility to undock his boat from my buddies and safely dock my buddies boat back to the dock. Dude went total Yankee stating he has been boat for 30yrs and never heard of this.Cue the screaming Yankee accent. Is my buddy right by saying its the inside boat responsibility to redock the outside boat?? Been boating for years and that was what I was always taught… Im assuming at the end of the day, your boat is your responsibly but is there a “boating code of ethics” to this

I would think so, since if he didn’t your buddy would be without a boat.

But since it sounds like your buddy was there for him to say something about it, personally I think your buddy was being rude by not tending his own vessel. I could never stand on a dock and demand for someone else to tend my vessel for me when I am fully able to do so myself. Personally I wouldn’t want anyone touching it.

If I tied up to a boat I would always ask first, and then if they weren’t around I would leave my name and number on their boat so they could contact me and I could come down and help.

When I’m tied on the outside of someone at a place w/o dock hands, I always keep an eye on my boat and try to move it when I see the inside boat wants to leave. What if the boat on the inside only had the captain…how would he do all that alone? I guess I consider it a courtesy that if I tie up to someone, I should untie when they want to leave.

We were down there helping him undock his boat when my buddy made the statement. Thats why we were there at the dock… helping him in the first place. Dude just got offended I assume. It was out of courtesy, my buddy and I were down there helping. I was just wondering if there was unwritten code about undocking boats.

Just untie the outside boat and let it drift away, pretty common sense to me.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

How could one not get offended by that comment? Who would ever point out when helping someone, “Aye, you’s guys know I don’t have to do this right, (grabs his crotch), it’s just cause I’m so (**() nice, (spits on the dock). Cause I’m courteous you know.”

I couldn’t imagine letting some rando untie and retie my boat without me being there, especially if you’re the one that tied up to the inside boat.

If I don’t know you, and your boat is tied up to mine at a dock, then I hope it’s high tide and there is a mud flat nearby. That’s where you’ll find your boat.

You trust some random guy to do that? The screaming yankee who bothered you so much, is ok moving your boat?

Don’t touch my stuff, I will gladly come move for you.

Got it… So basically what ur saying is move ur boat yourself because people are to stupid. Thanks for clearing that up guys.

I think what they are saying is don’t be a buckithead.

The way you described it was pretty bad on your part.
You blocked a guy in and then instructed him it was his responsibility to tend your boat?
That’s pretty good. I needed a good laugh today.

Here is your new “boating code of ethics”

Don’t tie up to strangers boats without consent.
Don’t board a boat without permission.
Don’t inconvenience others for your own convenience.
Don’t bring that selfish attitude to the dock and think people are going to take your crap.

You in no way were helping anyone except yourselves.
Fix your attitude.
Ask nicely before doubling up.
Watch so when they are ready to leave you are there to tend your own boat.
Make the process as easy on the inside boat as possible so next time they are more likely to allow you to double up.

and show some (**() respect and thoughtfulness to others.

Bumpers, what are they for?

Don’t get frustrated. From all my experiences the fella would have said something smart even if his boat was on the outside. It’s only getting worse so just get used to it unfortunately.

Why not just place a piece of paper or something noticeable on their steering wheel or wherever that says “when you are ready to move call this number”. I personally don’t raft out because of this reason and the extremely high probability of damage to mine or someone else’s boat.

Exactly why some restaurants have signs on the dock stating “No Rafting.”
