Are these bad conditions for Kiawah Beach? 10-15mph? What are the ideal conditions for surf fishing?
An actual 10-15mph is pretty breezy, but not terrible. I do NOT like calm days surf fishing. Sure, it makes the fishing easier, but also makes the bugs insanely active on most days. I prefer something around 5-8mph winds.
As for the wind direction, I prefer the wind to be blowing directly offshore (ie, in the direction I’m casting). Make sensing the strike much easier. I rarely get that around here, the wind is always blowing at a bit of an angle across my line, thus I prefer braided lines (much more sensitive).

I was always told that the best time to go fishing was anytime you could ( except for lightning or very hard winds ). I’ve fished when the bilge pump couldn’t keep up with the rain and absolutely smoked stripers … and won a largemouth tournament in pouring rain too. Also, I’ve caught white perch and stripers when the water was so calm it looked like a mirror, but most folks want a good ripple on the lake or they think they won’t bite. Best time to fish is any time that you can.
I’ll be leaving home shortly to try lake Murray for the stripers. Fishing in a good friends boat… deep water. Hope to post a great report later this morning. Currently, on Murray, the limit is the first 5 stripers that you catch, no exceptions, so our maximum creel is 10. Hopefully one big one will bite for us. There are some monster stripers in Murray.
Fishing report… We each had our 5 fish limit by 9:30 this morning. My first trip ever fishing with live herring was impressive for me. No monsters, but the 10 we had should total between 40 and 50 lbs. The spot lock option is priceless when fishing in 80’ of water. Needless to say I learned a lot today.
Awesome! Yeah…went today at Kiawah and only caught a pompano I believe? A whiting and a small sharks. Waves were too big
