Early April with kids

I will be coming down to the Charleston Area with my 2 boys (9&13) from 3/31-4/5. Both are experienced freshwater fisherman, but they have never been surf/pier saltwater fishing. They can’t grow up thinking the best hit/fight is a largemouth bass. I am a saltwater fishing native, be it much further north (CT).
I am looking for suggestions for an area to get the hotel/resort (Charleston, Edisto, Kiawah, Isle of Palms?), and a good place to fish from. We already have most of the necessary gear, but I am definitely up for rig/bait suggestions.

We are coming down from Rock Hill

Fresh shrimp on the bottom, small hooks #4-#2. I prefer double drop rigs and 2-4oz pyramid weights. From the pier or the beach, fish just inside the area where the waves begin to break. That time frame will be excellent for lots of Whiting bites. Good luck!

Don’t know your budget on lodging, or how far you want to be from the beach. Not sure I could be much help there.

“If it were catching, Everyone would be good at it.”

Mt. Pleasant and Folly Beach have the only public piers for fishing. There is on on the IOP but you have to be staying in the Sea CAbins to access it.

Thanks dparker, that’s a big help. We are going to try to stay on the beach or very close to it. I wasn’t so much looking for a resort suggestion, just trying to figure out where the best fishing will be, so I can get a place close. Is the better fishing in Isle of Palms, Hilton head Island, Edisto, Kiawah?

Thanks Capt

There’s also a new pier on Cosgrove in West Ashley. Can’t remember the name though.

Folly pier is a pretty solid choice. Plenty to do when not fishing, and there’s a really cool hotel right next to it (Tides). The hotel can be pretty pricey though, depending on the time of the year. Also some decent fishing back in the marsh on Bowen’s (make sure to stop in for some oysters) and James Island County Park. There’s also marsh access at Crosby’s, but never been there.

There’s a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.
