Early Season Mako

Several years ago I wrote an article about an offshore trip in March where we caught a Mako shark. I can still remember that day like it was yesterday. When the entire shark shot straight up in the air and landed broadside into the water we were all going crazy. The 45 minute battle that ensued with several screaming runs will be remembered by all of us.

This week there was a report on the offshore reports page about a mako hitting a trolling spread and rapidly removing line from an International 30-wide.

Every year in the late winter to early spring there are some good reports of mako’s being caught off of our coast. The story is always very similar and always exciting. It always starts with a reel screaming and many times is followed by an incredible aerial show as Mako sharks are known to jump when hooked.

There will be several Mako sharks caught this year over the next couple of months. If you are lucky you will be able to have a story of your own to remember and share with others for the rest of your life.
