edisto 40, 60 and OS question.

always just gone to the 40. what is at the 60 thats not at the 40? what about the edisto offshore? i usually just catch spades and bsb, i want to start trying to catch some different fish and was wondering if it is worth the extra ride.

Similar fishing at the 60 but have the opportunity to pick up some bigger better fish. Pressure on the fish may not be as much as at the 40. Ride to the 60 not bad.

The 60 is only 8 more miles or so. We went to the 40 yesterday and caught a bunch of moderate to small BSB. Nothing else.

We’ve been to the 60 a couple of times, and we caught larger bsb, gag grouper (smallish), and some other random fish. Also had to fight the cudas - they were grabbing the bsb as we were pulling them up. Hooked up a few cudas that way, and got one in the boat.

On a flat day like yesterday, I would have run to the 60 without question, except for a lack of time.

I think the 60 has more numbers of structure on the bottom and larger structures. The DNR website shows that the 40 has concrete rubble and a couple of old army personel carriers down on the bottom. The DNR website says that the 60 has a couple of ships sunk (330’ and 264’), several bridge sections, and some yarn racks (not sure what those are).

I’ve never been to the OS reef. Too far out for my experience level and my boat. But I’d love to go out there some time.

OS Reef will have some big amberjacks out there too. Kings will show up later in the summer.

thanks a lot yall, please keep it coming, im trying to learn everthing i can, a couple of voices from all you verterans may really help out a lot. i only make it to edisto about once or twice a year, so i dont have a lot of time to learn down there. how far of a ride is the OS?

From my Navionics app on my iphone:

The line marks the distance from shore to the OS reef. Far right purple marker is the Edisto OS reef. Far left purple marker is the point of Edisto Beach. Navionics shows it as being 32.5 miles. Again, I’ve never been out beyond the Edisto 60, so I’m not sure what is out there at the OS. And, one of the veterans may be know something different about the trip out to the OS that’s not shown on the Navionics app.

Incidentally, the other blue marks are the Edisto 40 and 60. And the North Edisto Nearshore is at the top, partially cut off.

And I’m still learning, too, so I’m no veteran. There are a number of other Edisto veterans on here that know tons and tons more than I do. I’m still a rookie.

Where do ya come down from JBH?

06 200 Bay Scout 150 Yam

i live in blythewood, just north of columbia. i want to try to get down there a little more than usual this year, but it all depends on how work is.

JBH,

I’ve been to and past the Edisto OS many times. I haven’t done a lot of bottom fishing. I mostly troll for king and dolphin. It depends on if you leave out of St. Helena Sound or the North Edisto, but the OS is about 25 miles out once you are out of the inlet. I rarely see anyone fishing it, but I’ve always caught fish there when I’ve fished it. I’ve caught kings, cudas, AJs on the OS. My buddies and I are just starting to learn how to bottom fish, so I plan to make a few stops there on the way in from trolling once the government makes bottom fishing legal again. I’ve also fished the Edisto 60 for kings a few times. Unlike the Charleston 60, it is rarely crowded. If you are interested in going out, but would prefer another boat alongside the first time or two, let me know. My buddies and I usually try to pair up and take two or three boats out when we go. We are in the Lexington/Columbia area and go to Charleston/Edisto about once a month.

Tidewater:

How far past the OS do you have to go to find dolphin? I imagine you have to go a good ways past it. 15-25 miles past the OS?

Also, the DNR webiste says the OS reef is not marked. Is there no buoy? Just curious.

There is a buoy at the Edisto 60. There is not a buoy or marker at the Edisto OS. The DNR numbers are pretty much dead on though and the structure is easy to find on the sonar. During the right time of year you could catch dolphin at the Edisto OS. It all depends on the water temp. The dolphin you would catch are most likely small. I usually go to Edisto Banks for dolphin which is another 15-25 miles.

Yeah, I knew there is a buoy at the 60. Been there a couple of times. But the OS reef is too far out for me to go in my single engine 21’8" bay boat. Just not comfortable with that at this point. 8-16 miles out on a calm day…I’m OK with that. 20-30 miles or more…that’s getting a bit too far out for my comfort level in that boat.

But, man, I’d sure love to go catch some of those bigger fish out at the OS reef. That would be a blast.

Edisto OS is deffinately worth your time if you have a boat that you feel comfortable going that far. Better chance to catch a keeper grouper and snapper when they are legal. Big BSB, Kings, and lots of spades. When all else fails and the bite has slowed, just cast a flashy jig or spoon and reel like there is no tomorrow. Cudas and large AJs will try to take the rod away from you.
Its always fun to watch a person hang their first Donkey.
Don’t limit yourself to just the DNR reef, buy a MapsUnique and hit some of the live bottom around the area. You can find B-liners and some of the largest BSB you’ve ever seen.
We have caught dolphin within about 8 miles of the OS but never any closer, that doesn’t mean they don’t pass through there, just that we haven’t ever seen them

RDW:

Thx for that info. The OS sounds like lots of fun. I’m one of those folks that has never hooked up an AJ, but I hope to one day before too long.

This has got me thinking about a bigger boat.

lefty, havent been on comp in a few days, sounds good to me, i have a 20 ft with a honda on the back so it will have to be calm, but im all in if we are taking a few boats. edisto9871, thank you for the all the input you have been a big help and seem to not mind sharing your knowledge.

I’m more than happy to throw in what little I have learned. But, let me be the first to say that I’m a rookie.

Also, I’m happy to buddy-boat out there with you or anybody else some time if the logistics can be worked out.

The largest Cuda I have ever seen came from the OS reef. Some huge reef donkeys as well.
