I have a 18’ bay boat and thought about making a run out to edisto 40 in the late spring early summer, does that sound reasonable? Do any of you have any luck out there, or what should I expect to catch so I would know what to rig up. I know it is a way off but this cold rainy weather has me day dreaming about warmer days to come. Any input would be great! Thanks
How far out is the Edisto 40?? I have at 20’ Bay Scout and am planning on hitting some of the nearshore stuff soon out of BFT.

Folks, I believe to 40 is about 10-12 miles and is certainly reachable with both of your boats. Fishing this time of year, you can pick up some black sea bass with no poblem. Fishing there late spring early summer…might have a king come by occasionally, shark, stuff like that.

Just pick your days. Its really not that far, especially if you now how to make the cut on front beach. Mostly undersized sea bass if bottom fishing. Maybe some spade fish. You may find some spanish mackeral schooling in early summer. I’m with ya cold weather and rain sure is giving me cabin fever.
Agree, needs to be laid down for sure but the sheeps & flounder should be there as well I think/hope??? Just call me clueless!! I was lookin to use squid & frozen shrimp on bottom with some rods rigged for sheep (power pro braid) carolina style (egg sinker, swivel, then 18 to 24" 25# flouro leader w/small hook using fid’s;
This will be 1st for me going offshore (not to far out from Beaufort/Port Royal) in my own boat.
Went with a group from work (bonding session) related venture with Amick’s from Savannah for 4hr. trip couple years ago with about 12 of us & we caught alot of sea bass (guide guessed over 500). Maybe kept 1 in 4. Had a mess though. No one got hung so I guess live bottom?? Only used cut squid on double hook bottom rig. This was in October though. Had 1 gal on the boat & she hung something that with the guides assist could not lift (broke the 80lb line. She also caught a gag 1" short of legal. Go figure!!

Guys, both of your boats will be fine out there on a good day. Keep your eye on the sky. Been out there a bunch with my old 17’ Scout and to the Edisto 60 with my old Sea Pro 21 Bay. Most of the seabass on the 40’ are going to be an inch or 2 short but there are nice spades every now and then. Caught lots of spanish in that area on the way out and in. On a real good day you could push on out to the Edisto 60 and you will get more keeper bass, spades, spanish and the occasional king. If you go past the 40’ have a good radio with backup as you will lose cell phone coverage somewhere between the 40’ and the 60’. Best of luck!

What time of the year are you talking about catching the spades?? What do you catch em on?? I heard jellyfish pieces in the summer…Thanks!!

You don’t want jellyfish. You want jellyballs. The balls don’t have the tentacles to sting you.
Here’s a picture of the jellyball. Just keep an eye out as you head out to the reef and you will usually find a few near the surface.

Also, take some bucktail jigs and make a few cast while you’re waiting on the bottom fish bite. Might catch a few spot tail.
There are also black drum out there.
Ditto Ithaca37 on the jellyballs but I have had them hit small pieces of squid if we couldn’t find jellyballs.

Thanks for all the input guys. We are coming down the first week of june for the week, but hopefuly will make it down to fish before then. Those black sea bass sound good. To me black sea bass are under rated for taste. Man I love them things in some hot grease with house of autry on them. My 3 yr old can eat his weight in fish. Anyway thanks for the replys. Can’t wait to try it.
I run it all the time in a 19’ Bay Boat, so you should be fine - like everyone said just watch the weather.

You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Strikers right on about the cut. Its a deeper area between the sandbar and the breakers at the point of Edisto, that a small boat can navigate if one is careful. Hang out for a little while at the point and you will probably see other boats running through the cut. Running at higher tides also helps. Edisto 40 is about 8 NM at a heading of 115 degrees.

This is the first year that the boat is coming down with us, and I’m unfamiliar with the cut. Is it off of the south river or north? I plan on buying a top spot n234 map to help me out with navigation but word of mouth is also great. Once again thanks for all of your guys help.

Once you pull out of Edisto Marina hang a left and run up the beach sound. At the point where the sound turns into front beach turn left. Beach will be on your left and the sand bar on the right. Go slow, at low tide its maybe 4 or 5 ft deep. You can slip thorough the cut, hug the front beach for several hundred yards then turn right toward open water. Edisto 40 is 5 or 6 miles out. Hope this helps
I fish there alot in the spring, mostly for sheepshead. April&early May,fish with fiddlers on the biggest structure and you’ll do good with the sheeps and black drum. I run out of Toogoodo in a 17’ Seahunt with no problems in 1’-3’ seas
