I’m heading down to Edisto on Friday night with a buddy of mine. We are planning to go out on Saturday morning to fish the creeks for reds and trout and would love to hook up with someone in the general Edisto/Stono area.
Is anybody willing to have a couple of enthusiastic, somewhat knowledgable, well-behaved, 36 year old tag-alongs? I have a boat, but never seem to have much luck on my own. I’m hoping to learn from someone that knows how to find fish.
Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…
I may need to follow you guys. I’ll be heading down Friday night as well with the family. I usually fish the South Edisto out of the bay creek area. Occasionally I’ll catch a red or two and a flounder here and there; however I usually have better luck with trout even when I’m targeting reds. I’ve been wanting to fish the North Edisto area; however out of convenience and proximity I usually hang around the South end.
The one thing that I’ve learned about the trout is focus on the tides and when the water is moving. For some reason I’ve had better luck on outgoing tides; however that is probably a coincidence. I usually fish topwater around structure; however the past couple of times have struggled to get bites on the top. Throw some electric chicken and white grubs at them and round up some mud minnows and give them a shot. One thing about the trout is if you get a bite or two mark the spot because there are usually more there. If you don’t get a bite in a few minutes keep moving until you do.
If you are fishing alone, let me know. I try to take the wife and kids out some, especially the wife when we have a baby sitter; however we are down there on our own this weekend so I’ll probably be fishing alone most of the time. I’ll be at the Bay Creek Villas.
I’m not sure if I’ll be coming down to edisto this weekend, the girlfriend wants me to take her out downtown friday night. If I do it’ll be saturday afternoon or sunday. I’ll let you know.
Do those mud flats just to the east of the main bridge to Edisto (over the ICW) hold any redfish at high tide? Those mud flats seem to be really skinny water…tough to get a boat into.
Anybody have any luck in there?
(There’s one flat that’s horseshoe shaped, and the other is a little further down, and more randomly shaped…sort of between the ICW and Steamboat Landing)

Take care of the girlfriend that’s much more important than trying to hook up with some guys fishing.
Edisto9871,
I’ve tried fishing that flat one time and have always thought that place has got to hold red fish at high tide, especially in the grass. The one time I did try that area, I spooked something really big, it made such a ruckus that I thought it was a tarpon; however it was in May so it was too cold for tarpon that time of year. It had to be a really big red. You can get in there at high tide, make sure it’s high and be careful. The currents are really strong there and there is some serious skinny water in that area. I got stuck in that area once and had to get out of my boat to push off. When I did I sunk to my waist in pluff mud, good thing I was holding onto the boat with a firm grip, it took me about ten minutes to pull my self out.
The one time I did try there it was really rough and windy so I had a hard time controlling the boat; however it does look like a good place. Good luck.
For all of you my mobile is 803 730 0757 if anyone is ever down there and loning it and looking for someone to fish with.
Alright here’s my plan. I’m going to eat a thick juicy steak at grill 225 then go get housed at a couple of bars, and end the night at her place. Saturday afternoon I’m going fishing as well as all day Sunday. I’m taking the john boat because I want to get in the flats.
The one where you spooked the fish - was it the horseshoe shaped flat or the one a little further down that has more random, meandering edges (the one that seems like it would be almost a cut-through to Steamboat Landing)?

I have never personally fished that horseshoe flat, but I have heard a couple people say they have seen dolphin working that flat as well as schools of reds, so you might see something there. What I want to do is check out the big mud flat and grass across from steamboat. Usually the only reason I head to steamboat is because the tide is too low to put the boat in at my house, so I want to see if any fish go up on that flat at high tide.
