Fished Edisto Banks on 6/9 with some local friends and my old man from the upstate. Way out was nice, ran at 28-30 knots. Started working the ledge at 6:45 am with several short strikes and a few cudas. Moved out towards 226 and worked an edge with a pretty good line that was holding a few fish, just weren’t eating. Managed to pick a few bulls out and a mercury missle along with a few Cudas. We needed a little tunny and a shark to complete the day. Tried every color possible. The final tally on skirts and lures tried was 34. Ryan and myself worked out a$$ off! Worked back to the ledge and then south to get a better angle for the run in and ended the day with a nice sail (day maker). He ate a pink and white islander first, then moved on to a small green and blue. It was my dad’s second trip off shore and his first sail. I belive his comment was,“That was worth the trip down, I think I’ll drink another beer!” Ride home was wonderful at 35 knots.
Almost forgot to mention, Dad narrowly escaped his dunk at the dock. Lets just say he’s got one coming!
Congratulations on the fish. Try leaving him in the water next time - this avoids tearing his sail, removing any of the slime (dust), or damaging his bill because you want a better picture.

Appreciate the tip Old School, Sail was torn when we got him to the boat. Mono? or caught before. Truth is, I’m not too concerned about damaging the fish. Returning favors to an incredible father by giving him experinces that he could of never imagined. I believe that is worth the picture, and the potential of killing a sail.

I agree…now multiply that by the 40,000 boats between Miami and Maryland that will catch a sail this year and you have a large number.
Kinda wonderer how long it would take for the sailfish patrol to start naggin’ once I posted this picture. Still don’t care, and trust me I know all the stats.
good job henry. you did your dad good. only wish my dad were still living so i could have some more days fishing with him. i would kill a sail any day to have another trip with him.
Oldschool & Greg1 shouldn’t you two guys be out looking for baby birds that have fallin’ out of their nest or something ?
Don’t get snippy just because you missed the point.
Nobody cares about the 1 fish. The main problem is that newbies see all these pictures and think this is an accep[table manner to handle billfish. What Oldschool and I care about is the sellfish attitude of the fishermen. Every sailfish is special to the people that catch them. We put our sellfishness to the side and do what’s best for the fish and the fishing community by releasing the fish in as healthy a manner as possible. We do that so that you and your kids may have a chance to catch Sailfish in the future.
If I throw one plastic bag overboard it’s not going to destroy the ocean. But if everybody that goes fishing throws 1 plastic bag overboard it adds up and the ocean will look like Spruille Ave.
Heck, I wish the guys had kept the fish. He kept saying “I don’t care about it”. If he truly didn’t care then why did he release it all? If you’re gonna pull it out to take bragging pictures for the internet then have a pair and throw the fish on ice and eat it.
Funny, I get bashed by this Henry Old fella earlier this year because I have no problem killing legal cobia at a rate of 2 fish per person per day for the meat…Then he takes this attitude about the posisblity of killing a sailfish so he can get a photo op…what a hypocrite
I’m with you greg…if you don’t care about the well being of the fish anyway, grow a set, throw it on ice and eat it.
I get sick and tired of all the “sport fishermen” that freak out when you bring home a box of meat…then they go out and intentially target fish just for the “thrill of it” and have no concern for the mortality rate of their actions…at least I “kill for the meat” instead of “kill for the trill”…
Nice fish if and when i land a sail in my boat there will definatley be a picture taken. I agree with trying to conserve the sailfish population, but in this case (a father son fishing trip) pictures are neccessary, escpecially if its a first sail. I would not a gree with catching 5 sails and taking pics of all of them.

That’s cool if that’s what you want to do…sellfish, but I won’t call the cops on you…just don’t post it on the internet as a “perfect release” for every newbie with a > 20 foot boat to see and want to emmulate.
It’s like fishing shows on ESPN2 where you see guys releasing legal YF tuna. I’m sure they keep a ton to eat but the ones they show on TV are the ones they release. They do that so that the masses get the idea of conserving the resource. Same thing here.
Besides…there are plenty of ways to photograph billfish without removing them from the water.
Catalac, your gay! you would be lucky to catch two cobia on a trip. Stop following me around.
Greg1, you say you don’t care, but obviously you have a deep concern for the treatment and well being of stick fish, that’s great! So you do care? I went back and reviewed several of your old post, boy you sure a grumppy fella. What’s the deal? Old man? No tang? Crappy job? I don’t get it, why so negative to everyone? Are we just not cool enough to post here? Get a life!
FYI, next one will be in the box and you will be able to see the pictures from the meat pole, on the hill. I will give him to my Amigo to make fish tacos with as they do all around the world. They’re pretty good, you should try’em. Tast kinda like sword fish.
p.s. I never said anything about a perfect release, and yes I am pretty new at this game, but probably a good bit better at it then most of the folks posting on this site thanks to a few good friends that can spank fish, do it for a living and are living pretty large.
I really don’t care about 1 or 2 fish. In fact, I want to eat one. Haven’t had one since the mid 80’s. Very good if I remember.
What I care about is internet jack-offs with selfish atittudes giving bad information to new fishermen.
You post this report like you’re the only person in the world with a great father. You post with a selfish attitude that it’s OK for you to do something in bad form because you love your dad.
Look, take the picture. Put it on the wall. Just don’t post it on the internet for bragginbg purposes where newbie’s see it and think that’s the right way to do it.
Roger that. FYI, my dad IS</font id=“red”> the greatest dad in the entire world!!! And I don’t have a problem with taking a sail out of the water for a picture. If a “newbie” wants to do it, have at it, good luck.

I’m done!
Yankee much?
It’s great to see newcomers to our sport with such attitudes.
