Came across an string of bottles that were anchored near Edisto Banks area on Saturday. Wondering if anyone has seen such a thing or attempted such.
By the looks of it it had been there for some time. Looked like several Gatorade bottles on top with several others being held under as well.
Ok… what was at the other end?
Not sure but sounds like you found someone’s trolling area?
“Why Bruce?”
Assuming someone put them out to troll around.
Couldn’t tell how far the bottles were attached to the line under the water.
Sounds like a half assed attempt at creating a “FAD” (fish attracting device), similar to what’s used in some Caribbean areas.

Did you catch any fish on them?
Caught 20 slingers close by. Didn’t really see it til afterwards though

Wondering the same thing…
What ever it was it had some weight to it.
It was ripping pretty good and was holding strong
When I ran headboats , once I hung an anchor so bad that I almost tore a set of bits off the stern. It was getting late and I had to get my customers back to the dock. We tied 3 poly balls to the rope, saved the spot on GPS, cut the rope and came home. $800 anchor, $1000 rope and $500 chain on the bottom . It was a week before the weather would let us get back to retrieve it. –
Definitely sounds like a FAD or at least the marker for a FAD.

FAD. If it was rigged with that much intent you think there would be more sub surface stuff on it. Google fish attracting device, you see some cool stuff.

Sounds like you found a FAD… whoever made it is playing with fire. Some people hide them under the surface and mark them with the GPS. Once you read about them do not put them out. They are all over the place in the DR. In my opinion fishing a FAD is cheating.
how is that cheating?
If I’m posting, its because I’m sitting here at work, dreaming about fishing.
I have heard of folks laying out butcher paper on a calm day and fishing around that. Not sure how that’s cheating. Would you ignore a floating pallet, etc…?

My $0.02 - Since you know where your FADs are, as opposed to stumbling across a floating pallet or bucket, some peoples sense of sportsmanship, especially in a tournament, could be infringed upon.
They are highly effective, depending on how long they have been in place.
They also seem to be illegal:

That is not to say there are not a lot of them out there.

If it’s against the law then it should be against rules in every tournament. Most every tournament I’ve fished list that you have to follow law enforcement rules.
This popped up on my FB page today…

it’s no different than all the man-made reefs out there

Mechanic beat me to it, but what’s the difference between a FAD and the Charleston 60, 4KI, Caper’s Reef, etc?
