Edisto Beach 5/20-5/24

On vacation on Edisto Beach all this week. I’ve been skunked several times so far, but last night I hooked up with something big on a Carolina rig with a shrimp. After a minute of fighting it cut my fluorocarbon leader. It felt pretty big whatever it was.

After that I switched up to using a wire double drop rig. I caught baby blacktip after baby blacktip. I’m thinking mama blacktip must be out there with all these newborns swimming around.

The only real action I’ve gotten is around low tide. High tide seems to be the bait-stealing crabs show. No whiting yet, which has really surprised me.

I’ll post some pictures if I get anything big.

I’m going to be at the campground this weekend… I go regularly. It is all about where and when you fish with Edisto. No whiting is odd… especially if you’re fishing the front beach. Not so much if you’re fishing the river. Really weird if you’re fishing just inside the rivers…

Yep. Right in the middle of the front beach between the State Park and the south fork. I just watched a guy a few houses down reel in baby black tip after baby black tip over and over on a double drop just like I was doing last night. He even got a couple double hook ups.

Fish either Jeremy or Frampton inlet, I beleive you’ll do much better.

You can’t catch fish on a dry line

fish the golf courses ponds next to the main road, where the drainage pipe.used to alot of fish there.

I met the guy who was reeling in the baby black tips. We traded tips and reports and hung out fishing this afternoon. He got a whiting and about a 2’ sharpnose. We both got lots more baby sharks. The baby sharks are really getting on my nerves, so I might go do some inshore in the boat tomorrow. I’d love to paddle some baits out in the kayak, but the breakers have been huge. I’m too old for all that.

I think even if you fished a whole mullet with a 8/0 circle those d**n 10" sharpnose would still find a way to get on it

My son and I caught some stingrays on the boat on Wednesday, so I cut the wings off of them, making three pieces of bait from both stingrays we had in the cooler. I put 7/0 Owner demon circle hooks on double drop rigs and tied a 16 oz sinker to the bottom of the rig using 6 lb mono so that the sinker would break away when a big fish ran with it. I put both hooks in one piece of bait, one hook in each end.

I didn’t have steel leader on for the first fish I lost. The second and third fish we lost was due to my rookie friend cranking the drag down way too fast: one broke the steel leader right in the middle and another bent the clamp loose. The last fish I got was well after sunset with the moon high above the water. I let my wife fight it for a few minutes just so she could feel what it’s like to fight a shark. Once it got up near the breaking waves the hook pulled.

So I pretty much struck out on landing a big shark. I could have done much better if I had really prepared for fishing and gotten all of my big fish surf gear ready. Instead I went with my rods that had the most line on them since I was paddling my baits out by kayak yesterday. Maybe I’ll care more next time, but I was super busy with family time on the beach this week.

Oh yeah, on IOP the other day I was catching little spinners smaller than the mullet I was using.
