Edisto Offshore Challenge - May 22, 2010

Folks, thanks so much for such a wonderful turnout in Edisto tonight. The Edisto Beach Offshore Challenge has 28 boats heading out tomorrow and over $13,500 up for grabs! Wonderful Captain’s meeting, the weather kept some folks in, but it was questionable up until the end. I’ll update the website with stuff as soon as possible. Right now, I’m heading to the Darkside!

Thanks again folks, come on down to the Edisto Marina tomorrow night 4-6pm for the official weigh-in.

This tournament turned out to be great. We are so happy that the local tournaments have such a following. For those who missed out today: We hope that you enjoyed your day on the hill. The seas this morning were 2.6 ft. at 9 seconds. Just big rollers. Captains that I spoke to complained that it got so flat that baits wouldn’t work properly. Most of the fish were caught this morning. Would have been a fun, flat ride back. Great job, Darren. Lots of fun.

Who won? Was the fishing any good?

Short grass and tight lines, make a man feel so fine!

Great tournament. Had a ball. The weather turned out better than the forecast for a change. Other than having the port engine jump out of gear just as we were getting on plane to come home at 50nm offshore, the fishing and the company was good. Made the 4 hour journey home on the starboard motor–thank the Lord for the flat seas and the following wind. Didn’t make the weigh-in but had 7 nice gaffers (biggest about 30#) and raised a billfish. Looking forward to 2nd annual challenge! (sans the motor problems of course)

Don, glad ya’ll made it back in ok. We saw Harvey working on the motor Friday when we came back in. We bottom fished 100’ Friday with a lot of big BSB, some vermilons and triggers. Saturday we didn’t enter the tournament but did make it out to the Deli with 11 dolphin and released a sail. Biggest Dolphin was 37.

The Edisto Beach Offshore Challenge lived up to its name this past weekend as 29 teams from across the state vied for the title. With the affordable entry fee and 20 chances to win, it’s easy to see why the first offshore event directed by Darrin Moore was such a success.

The tournament started out Friday, May 21 with the Captain’s Party & meeting at Buck’s Pizza on Jungle Road. Teams from as far as Monroe, North Carolina showed up to register. They grabbed their Edisto True Value Hardware sponsored boat buckets, a few Edisto Beach Offshore Challenge tournament shirts, then sat back and listened to live music by Charleston’s very own, Malfunction Junction. The live music and wonderful food adds to the festivities, but the meeting was all about the rules. The Captain’s meeting started at 7:30, and Tournament Director Darrin Moore went through all the rules to make sure everyone knew exactly what was expected.

The boats left the dock early Saturday morning ensuring they had plenty of time to arrive on the fishing grounds some 50+ miles offshore by the 7:00am start time. The weather had been questionable all week long, and with the forecast calling for a 5-10 mph East wind, with 3 to 5 ft waves, the ride out was certainly on the bumpy side. However Mother Nature was on our side, because not long after the boats started fishing, the sea’s laid down. Allowing numerous boats, such as the 900 hp Blew By U, to open things up and let the big dogs eat on the ride in.

When the boats came back in from the full day of fishing, they were greeted at the Edisto Marina by the Buck’s check-in team. The marina dock was a beehive of activities with the live music, ice cold beer, the weigh-in, fresh BBQ sandwiches and the many door prizes lined up to be given away. Friends, families and fans came from all over the island to check out the teams and their catches.

The fishing was pretty good with over 600 lbs of fish weighed in. The largest being a 52 lb. Wahoo, brought in by Jess Clamp aboard Captain Lee Jernigan’s 40’ Oc

How was Captn Browns’ BBQ?

Darrin, nice job on the tournament. I stopped by with my boy to see the weigh in, and saw the 49# hoo and 45# dolphin, very nice! It all seemed very well organized.

2000 SeaPro 180CC w/ Yammy 115 2 stroke
1966 13’ Boston Whaler w/ Merc 25 4 stroke “Flatty”

Wish I could have been there with my son! He would have loved it.

Sounds like fun at the weigh-in.

Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

Posting on a message board all the time doesn’t make you smart. Frankly, it just means you probably need to get a life.

Capt. Brown’s hand rubbed meat went over well, best BBQ we’ve had in a while.

Thanks for all the compliments guys, we will do it again next year!
