Edisto Sportfishing Association

We just got home from spending the week with my wife’s family. I’m really thankful my brother let me take his boat. It’s ony a BW 150 Sport, but it was a route to sanity…

Anyway…we stayed in a rental that belongs to an old beach family. The walls were covered with award plaques for different years and events from the Edisto Sportfishing Association. Is that group still in existence?

Thanks…I was just curious. BTW, your vhf works pretty good.

Big Wes the Edisto Sports Fishing Assoc was around for a while and a lot of the guys that have been down here for a long time were part of it. My Grandfather, Dad, and my Uncles were very active in it. My dad and mon had to even change there wedding date 3 weeks before the wedding due to an ESA turney. My grandfather fished his old bertram the Yankee Rebel and his 28 ft (i think) cris craft called the Sun Burst during those years. One of my Uncels who is on this site also fished his 31 bertram called the Combahee Lady. I will ask my grandfather where some of the old pics are and try to post them. From what I can remember the ESA started to die out when I was prob 6 or 7 (maybe younger). One of my first trips offshore was when i was 2 or 3 during an ESA tourney on the Nauti Gal. In the pics all you can see is a hat life jacket and legs. the Nauti Gal is an old 28 Bertram that has probably seen more blood on its decks then most could imagine in its 35 + or - years fishing out of Edisto. We are very lucky that people like Bucks Pizza and Strker are willing to sepnd there time to get another organization like the ESA going again.

also big wes what was the address of the house you are refering to.

3316 Palmetto. Thanks for the info. It’s interesting. Back in the 70’s we used to rent a place several weeks of the year called “Zu-Well” close to the Pavilion/Pier. The guy that lived upstairs was a shrimper on a boat called the Jo-Pat. My dad would go out with him and work for all the by-catch blue crab, flounder, etc he could but in his big aluminum cooler. One summer, I got to be old enough and went out several times. We lived in Bishopville back then, and my friend was Mike Farver…his folks also owned a house a few down from where we stayed. I spent just about every day with him fishing on the docks at the Edisto Marina.

The name of the boat on the plaques and awards was the Sassy Gal wasnt it. Mr DD is the guy that owns that house and has been friends off the family for years. My dad grew up with his children and I grew up with his grand children. I believe the Sassy Gal was a Silverton around 40 ft. I could be incorrect on this but he has always had silvertons b/c he use to own a chrysler dealership and Silvertons used Chrysler motors which ment cheap labor and parts.

There were no boat names on the plaques, but there was one picture of a boat named “Split Tail”. I think you are right about his boat being named Sassy Gal. I remember him and I think the boat was lt. blue or aqua colored with an open cabin and a flybridge.

Big Wes, I’d encourage you to get involved with the EFC. Check out our website at www.edistofishingclub.com and email me with any questions. For the month of December, it’s $20.00 to join. Which that will basically cover the Christmas party coming up Dec. 13th. The yearly dues go back up to $40.00 January. We have 21 members right now, which some live in Edisto and some just visit Edisto. We meet the third Saturday of every month at 3:30. We hae food at the meetings and usually try to schedule someone to come in and educate us on something fishing related. For example, Sea-Tow is coming in Feb. to talk about their services, give us some demonstrations, etc.
It’s a good way to network and meet people that enjoy fishing and Edisto.

Send me your email and I’ll add you to the email list.

I am sorry the boat name is the Split Tail i just typed in the wrong name.

Ed 82, You are right about the old Nauti Gal. She caught her share of fish in her day. I fished on it with Mr. Reed along time ago.

Anyone that has had the pleasure of knowing or fishing with Mr. Eddie has been a more sucessful fisherman b/c of it. A lot of what I know about fishing today came from him. I was lucky enough to be on the boat with him for one of his former state record Dolphin. The fish we cought actually broke the state recod that he allready held. He told me that another time they had a deffinite state recod dolphin that they didnt feel like driving to charleston to get weighed so they just ate it.
