Edisto surf fishing restrictions proposed

Seems like there could be a better solution, than this. http://www.carolinasportsman.com/details.php?id=15409

So many restrictions being placed on the beach these day’s. I did some scouting out of Folly and Sullivans recently and the list of rules posted on these beaches are growing and growing. If I can’t bring a well behaved dog or responsibly enjoy a beer, it’s enough to make me avoid going there. I’ll stick to my small fish:smiley: A few bad apples are ruining it for everyone. I alway’s try to be mindful of others. When I set up on a spot it is well away from other folks, sometimes that takes a little bit of walking to get away from the crowds, but they tend to not want to walk far and if you are willing to do so the crowds thin out considerably. Any fisherman that is willing to leave trash on a beach is a bum. I don’t know anyone I fish with that would do that. I personally have ran a half of a mile down a beach to retrieve a plastic zip lock bag and I’m fat:smiley: While I was scouting last week I saw a lady on Sullivans bring her dog out onto the beach. The dog did it’s buisness and she picked up the poo with one of the provided blue plastic bags. I then saw her tie the bag shut, and she dropped it on the beach where she stood. Certainly a fair amount of these folks whom many are locals out getting their exercise in the morning, are not willing to carry around warm poopy bags with them on their walk. Allot of them just wait until no one is looking and drop it on the sand. Makes me wonder which is causing more harm to the environment. The poo or plastic bags. Thus me as a responsible dog owner will be punished along with the yahoos unwilling to pick up after themselves. Sullivans now requires a permit and proof of a rabies vacination for anyone wanting to bring a dog. You have to go to the get one at one of their offices and only then, will your dog be allowed to go to the beach. The posted fine for drinking a beer is 1040.00. I say if someone leaves their trash, being any trash including blue plastic poo bags. By all means hit them with it. Punish those who are committing the crimes, not those who conduct themselves in a

Yeah what he said!^

Our family visits Edisto every summer. I am not disagreeing with anyone but based on my experiences I don’t think it is a terrible concession. The only place you can fish safely during those hours is around the groins. Unfortunately there are a lot of fisherman that don’t realize that. They think it is best to park their lawn chair right in the middle of the beach. There are just too many kids in the water at that time of the day/year. It is unfortunate. I am not saying it is right. Just saying that I understand the concerns and I don’t think their proposal is too unreasonable.

Sorry you have had bad experiences with guys in their 50’s. I’m 58 and have been surf fishing regularly for about 35 years. I don’t bother anyone. I don’t set up close to other people, families, kids, or other fishermen.
I agree that some having been putting more and more beach restrictions in place for years now. I had a 30 something mom walk about 100 yards down the beach out of the lifeguard area out at Kiawah back in June to tell me what a danger my activity was, blah, blah, blah. I just let her talk and kept on fishing.
I meet and talk to beach goers almost everytime I’m out. They stop to ask questions, etc., both young and old alike. I met 2 young fellas last Sunday out at Folly fishing. Nice guys that love it like we all do. We traded some tips and stories and I feel like I made a new friend.
Anyway, I try not to pass judgement on any group of people, old, yound, white, black, etc. I learn a lot from the posts that the younger folks put on this forum. Maybe I’m weird, but life is too short to have any confrontation while fishing; especially at the beach. Before I’ll argue, I’ll move. We have tons of miles of beaches to fish.
I can think of several things they could regulate to make the beach more enjoyable for all. None of them are fishing !
That’s my 2 cents worth. I could be wrong.
Peace.

Hey 40, video showing error

Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.

I haven’t had any trouble at folly I just get the tree huggers at the mt p pier challenging my legal fish.

Just read the article and that will have zero effect on me. 10am to 4 pm sucks for fishing and i like before and after the dates set. I cant beleave they’re blaming fishers. I literally clean up like a 1/4 mile or more of beach everytime plus the water. Its the alcoholics with the leave it where it falls attitude that trash the place.

I watched the video typical idiot tree hugger.

I have had alot of rude people on Sullivan’s come up to me and ask me what did the fish ever do to me. And that I was murdering sharks by catching them. I just don’t respond to them and they just walk away. Had some entitled teenagers on sullivans say I need to put cones out in front of my lines so people don’t run into them that it’s dangerous. I only fish folly Beach now and everyone is allways friendly except the kitesurfers. They have came within 10 foot of the shoreline where I have 3 lines out and run over them and cut them off. Me and my wife would yelling at him that I was fishing here and he just kept on coming back and thought it was funny. We like to stand our ground when it comes to them.

I was told by the IOP police that I had more right to fish than anyone doing any other water sport…period.

I fish IOP 90% of my trips now for probably 8 years. I’ve only had a couple instances where someone had a problem with me fishing. MOST of the time I have a problem with the IGNORANT, Entitlement Comlexed, clueless folks, visitors and locals, that visit the beach thinking it was put there for them.
As Pete said, in the busy month we fish spots you have to put some effort in to get to. Most folks are very very VERY lazy. They are not gonna lug all their CRAP 3/4 of a mile or more to sit down.
In the summer months it’s early on early off for me. Plus it gets HOT!

I have posted this before, remember the code number, you may have to REMIND the Po-Po.

Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976 Annotated. Title 50. Fish, Game and Watercraft. Chapter 1. General Provisions. § 50-1-137. Impeding or obstructing hunting, trapping, fishing, or harvesting of marine species unlawful; penalty.

Code § 50-1-137
</font id=“red”>
It is unlawful for a person willfully to impede or obstruct another person from lawfully hunting, trapping, fishing, or harvesting marine species. Any person violating the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be punished as provided by Section 50-1-130. In addition to the criminal penalty, any person convicted must have his privilege to hunt, trap, fish, or harvest marine species recreationally or commercially revoked for one year.

Nice to have met some of you out on the beach. I have enjoyed this forum for many years. But when it turns into bashing specific groups of people, I can no longer participate. I can only imagine the outrage if someone would have maligned any group of people other than “old white folks.”
I hope the rest of the fall fishing season is good to you all.
That’s it for me.
Peace.

I believe y’all were arguing the same point. It is not right to judge someone simply because of the color of their skin. More so by their actions and who they are, and what they do. It got a little heated and I can’t say I have been the recipient of being treated unfairly for being white. Y’all are closer than y’all think. Jack we enjoy and respect your wisdom and posts. Please stick around buddy. I don’t think 40 meant to be disrespectful. He was just explaining how he felt he was treated as a non white and understandably he was angry over the situation. Y’all are both upset for the same reason. Try to find common ground in this situation. Got nothin but love for you both. Stay with us Jack. Your one of the good ones.
