Guys and gals,
I have a trip coming the end of June down to Edisto.
Been some time since my last trip ( which was my first beach experience) and it was not the best.
My father-in-law and I are looking to hit the surf in the afternoons as well as I plan on some early mornings.
What am I looking at tackle wise and what should be biting?
The last few beach trips I have used 7’ Rods and reels holding 150 yrds+ of 10 lbs mono as a min. Do I need to beef up?
Also we have used shrimp and squid from the shops and sandfleas and the small fish the kids catch from the surf in their dipnets. Would like to try some lures of sort but have NO CLUE as to what to try. Thinking about some of the Jumbo Roadrunners. Help on that is needed.
your rods and reels sound fine. for bait, go buy fresh shrimp from edisto seafood on the beach or flower’s seafood on the way in. i usually use 1/0 or 2/0 mustad hooks on a fishfinder rig. the pre-made rigs sold at the stores work fine too. you shouldn’t have any problem catching whiting, bluefish, sharks, rays, and possibly spottails or black drum. for bigger sharks cut off a piece of whiting for bait. i don’t use lures in the surf, can’t help you with that one.
Walk down to Jeremy Inlet and fish in the surf. If you’re not having any luck, walk to the first bend by the rocks and throw some topwater lures. Tons of trout hang out by those rocks. Caught this one the other day on the second cast.
Dito fresh bait. Catch some finger mullet in surf if you have a cast net.
If all above fails try around edges and ends of groins. There is no bar off the beach except at the south end around the 3200 block. Anywhere else look for some structure or fish just at back of suds or just in the breakers. Way out usually just gets you a shark or ray.
For artificials - a chrome/black baby spook, clark or hopkins spoon, or a SeaAsassins or DOA shrimp or grub. Spook for topwater of course. Spook and spoons will work if a school is there. For probing around the grub of DOA is better. Try rootbeer/chart or a lite color - pearl or white or natural.
hey waterdog, me and my family will be at edisto last week in june. look for us in the sound. i do a lot of shark fishing(pretty much all i do is fish while im there) id be happy to have some company fishing and could hook u up with some fresh mullet or shrimp and some pointers for some decent sized toothys. (3-5ft.)

for every action, there is an equal and opposite Government program.
I know what the hopkins spoons are; What are DOA shrimp and SeaAssassins?
For sure want to get in on the Shark thing. THose puppies fight good. And that is what I am after.
i love the night bite for sharks. usualy start around 7pm and fish till 12-1 am. casting gets kind of spooky though. we usualy wade out to chest deep water then cast. but after u relese 5 or 6 good sized sharks you cant help but hear the theme from jaws in your head while walking in the pitch black water. we hooked one last year at about 3am, could have been a big ray, but it spooled 300yards from me. all i could do was stop him for a couple seconds before he would start runnin again. he went all the way to the knot on my reel then we thought the line broke but when we reeled it back in there were both of my 7/0 hooks still there, straight as an arrow. dissapointing but fun none the less.
