Edisto to Charleston ICW questions

We’re planning to do a daytrip from Edisto to Charleston during our stay in Edisto in 2 weeks . We’ll leave Edisto marina early am, have lunch (sightsee time permitting) somewhere in the Charleston harbor area, and then return that afternoon/evening making sure we get back to the marina well before dark. We’re very open to “non-touristy” restauants if you know of a really good one you like. Fresh local seafood is what we love! It obviously would need to have a dock or at least one nearby.

Also, if there are any ICW or Charleston Harbor “issues” we need to be aware of, please pass them along! FYI, we’re familiar overall with “low-country” ICW cruising but would appreciate whatever local tips or ideas you can give us.

Also, about how much time should we allow for the trip each way? I’m “guessing” 1 1/2 or 2 hours - does that sound right?

Thanks in advance for your ideas and suggestions!

Anybody?? We’d really appreciate your suggestions! Thanks!

JiminGa…there is nothing to speak of on the ICW on the way up to Chucktown that I know of but I have not made the trip since last summer. I did get pulled by DNR for driveing past a boat ramp that was not posted as a no wake zone(didnt even see it till he showed it to me)and learned how to be coutiouse…even though I didnt see it. Just follow the markers and head north to town and enjoy the ride. I think you are about right with the time 2 hours for stops to enjoy the scenery along the way.
Once you get to the harbor I cant help with any restaurants except maybe Shem Creek bar and grill, thats the only place I have ever been by boat.
Hope this helps a bit…I know its not much but just trying to help.

JiminGa, Have made that trip a couple of times and find it to be a great day trip. Nice scenery, as they say just keep it between the markers. We usually stop for lunch at the Charleston Crab House, they have a small dock you can tie up to and have both inside and outside seating overlooking the waterway, nice bar and some good seafood. They are located on the Elliot Cut/ Wappoo Creek off the Stono River between the Stono and Charleston Harbor just before reaching the Charleston Harbor. Good sightseeing around the harbor, Ft.Sumter, new bridge, and Yorktown. We will be down in about 10 days and plan on taking a day trip either to Charleston or down to Beaufort. Hope this helps

Did the trip from Chas to beaufort this past weekend. It was a good time. There were a few stretches on the way down that the outgoing tide and the southwest wind made it a little choppy. Thanks to the PATHFINDER I was able to get on top of the chop. Pretty basic and easy trip. As far as food once you get to Chas goes Shem Creek would give you the most options. How long it takes is up to you. It took us a little under 3 hours going down to beaufort and almost 7 coming back. Another trip you can make is one over to Morgan Island. We didn’t see any monkeys though but the trip was nice. Good luck and have fun

Thanks guys - this was exactly the kind of info I was looking for!

RR, look’s like we’ll be in Edisto at the same time (we’re in Edisto May 9 to 16). BTW, we’ve done lunch trips to Beaufort several times (when we stay in Hilton Head). Great eats there! You can dock free at the downtown marina and its an easy walk to all the restaurants.

If you’re into fishing while on your trip, from Beaufort you’re close to Port Royal Sound/Broad River and the cobia craziness around Parris Island and the bridge!! They should be running by then.

Nice work on the monkeys, all we saw was a couple of jackasses.

Thanks for the info on Beaufort, never tried that trip before. Did go over to Morgan Island last year after hearing about the Monkeys for years and not believing it. Went over early in the morning and anchored by the signs, it took about a half hour before they made their way down to the beach to check us out. I was beginning to think they or we were a joke and getting ready to pull anchor when they showed up. Good 1/2 day trip out of Edisto.
