Edisto to Port Royal Sound by boat

Assuming I can cruise around 26-28, what is the drive time from Edisto to the mouth of Port Royal?

I am pretty much guessing, but I think about 45 mins. to 1 hour (I assume you are going through the intracoastal?)

KNOTHEAD

around an hour give or take

198B Sea King W\F115 Yammi (kitchen pass)

Nice run through intracoastal - about an hour

You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry.

You can save about 30 min by going Harbor river, behind Fripp Isl. and then behind St. Phillips Island. The run down the ditch all the way to the sound is really about 2 hrs. in a fast boat due to the no wake zones and the ever present Beaufort town water police, otherwise a great trip . Enjoy and be safe.

edisto cat,
I am not familiar with the route going behind St. Phillips, is it pretty easy to get through? I have been up the Harbor River to Trenchards, but that is as far as I have gone, I heard it is pretty skinny in this area at low tide???

The creek inland of St. Phillips is pretty narrow in one place but has plenty of water. Great trip…

Is the way from Edisto to the bridge at Harbor Island marked? People I have spoken to say that there are many hazards in the Sound. As I vacation at Fripp, I would love to motor from say the Dawhoo Bridge to the marina at Fripp. Also, there is one stretch from the Harbor Island bridge going inland to Fripp Inlet that is very dicey at low tide. Any thoughts, suggestions, comments, etc appreciated.

Much safer ride to do the waterway the whole trip… Edisto Up to ■■■■■■■ cut, Ashepoo on over to Ashepoo-Coosaw cuts, out and up the Coosaw to B’fort. Great views the whole way. It is tricky cutting across the sound to Harbor River. I think it’s closer up Coosaw unless you want to go to Port Royal ocean side for some reason.

If you’re so ■■■■ smart - why ain’t ya rich?

Whoooo - Fish ON!

Redfish…The way across the sound in front of Pine and Otter Islands is not clearly marked. Down the ditch thru ■■■■■■■ Cut and down the Ashepoo is. Once you get to the sound a look at the chart or your GPS will get you across the sound to Egg Bank and then to Harbor Island Bridge. If you are not comfortable using a chart or GPS it’s better you stay in the ditch all the way. Once you get to Harbor River, ther is plenty of water all the way to Fripp Marina even at a minus tide so long as you are diligent. Most folks have the biggest problem turning in Fripp Creek and cutting the point to close. Just follow the chart and don’t hurry. It’s a beautiful area rarely seen by the usual boating community. Good luck…

I’ve timed it from Dawhoo landing on Edisto to the marina in Beaufort. It was right around an hour. Here’s the back way around the sound. It is clearly marked and is not any extra time to travel. Also nice when the wind picks up.

I can promise you anything Edistocat posts about these waters could be written in stone. Because of a past job, he is incredibly knowledgable. When he and I talk about the waters, wind effects on clarity etc., I hang on every word. It would have taken me many years to learn what I have from him in the past three. Now the fishing techniques, that’s a cat of another color!!! It tickles me when I run on a flat with a local friend (I grew up in Walterboro} and they start to panic. When I show them the depth gauge, we’re in 5 feet of water. Thanks Edistocat. Bob

Edistocat, I have a 24’ I/O. is there enough water for my boat going the way you say behind Fripp ?

I haven’t been below Fripp that way but once since ‘89 in my 26’ Twin Vee. Had plenty of water the whole way. Just remember the creeks are smaller than the ICW and while there is plenty of depth, the channel is smaller. I’ve taken a 31’ Bertram through that way from Edisto to HH. Take it easy the first time and you’ll be able to make the run with confidence on your return. As far as the time allocated by the gentleman in the previous post down the ditch, his lines are staight while the waterways curve and don’t take into account the no wake zones. If I’m not mistaken the original question was also about a trip tp Port Royal Sound further down the ditch from Beaufort.

Hope no one thought I was trying to contradict anything anyone else was saying. I was trying to address any concern he may have on whether to cut across St. Helena Sound or take the ditch. I didn’t feel like the sound was safe and clearly marked to cross and would be easier to go around. I only made the comment about the back way was marked if he had any concerns on getting lost. I was only addressing that portion of his journey. Also, I only gave him my trip times with destinations so that it may help him get an 'idea’of the time involved in his trip. I thought the trips may be of similar distance. I apoligize if I have given him bad information.
Fishingwithbob, I was only trying to make a contribution and not trying to dispute anything Edistocat was trying to say. Hope he didn’t interpret my post the same as you.

DueSouth, My post had nothing to do with you. It had everything to do with Edistocat. Which sentence, in my post, led you to believe I was making any reference to you?

It just looked like you came to edistocats defense as if he had been attacked. Then read ECs posts that my map was not really a good representation of the actual path of the creek behind St. Helena Sound. I actually agree with everything EC had said and only included the map to give a 'visual' of what he was saying about taking the ditch around St.Helena sound. It seemed he commented on the inaccuracies of my map and example of a trip timeline soon after your post which seemed to come to his defense when all I did was post a map showing what I thought he was describing.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

Well, it’s sounds like, and I truly hope, we don’t have an issue. Bob

I’m a little confused now, I really didn’t think you would go by Fripp Island marina to get to Port Royal Sound, Is this the way? I thought you would stay in the Harbor River and cut through to
Trenchards Inlet and then past the boat ramp on the road past Penn Center? Is this not right? …Thanks, I have a place at Edisto and I would like to try this run sometimes, I am farmiliar with crossing St. Helena sound and the Harbor River Bridge area
thanks

You can take the Harbor River to the back of Trenchards. You need a good map/gps and need to go slow. The channel is only about 3 or 4 feet deep at low and very narrow. It winds around. At high tide it looks like a lake, Beware it is mostly mud flats and oysters. What I think is a better route, other than the ICW, is to take the creek from Harbor into back of Fripp inlet and then go to Trenchards via the Story River.
There is a shallow wide spot in the Story River, but the last time I went through it was marked with small buoys. At mid tide up the Story is not a problem.
