Edisto - Week of 7-13 through 20th

Stayed in a cabin at the State Park and had a great relaxed time.

Although I had the jon boat with me, I spent most of the week surf fishing to stay with the family. All surf efforts along the beach at the State Park from the rock groin down to about 300 yards past the park gift shop. Fished heavy rigs with cut bait out past the breakers, using cut ray wings, bluefish, menhaden, or mullet. Never caught a decent shark - caught tons of baby sharpnose, one ladyfish (surprised me), small to medium rays, and even a nice whiting on cut bait. Using cut shrimp on the basic two-hook bottom rig, caught small whiting and a small jack of some sort with a yellow tail… and he ended up being cut bait as well. All fun, all relaxing.

Had a STRONG hit and run that peeled about 100 yards of line off near the groin the first day before breaking off on the rocks… I was about 30 yards away with the cast net and turned to see the rod bend into a “U”, then pulled the sand spike over and the rod was heading for the surf  oops. The line was in the rocks almost immediately and he was peeling 50 lb Power Pro like a freight train… Figure large ray or a nice shark. Cut bluefish was what it hit.

On the 18th, I actually got the jon boat out with the wife. It was looking calm, so we ventured over to Fishing Creek behind Otter. I got some menhaden and mullet in the well and started fishing the incoming tide around oyster beds for reds. Caught two nice bonnetheads right off the bat, released both… then the wind came up. We headed back to get across before the weather got worse and had a sporty ride back across to Edisto. Not making that trip again without a bigger boat.

Menhaden were THICK everywhere… caught a mess of them off the small dock at the State Park (Scott’s Creek) with a 5 foot cheap Old Salt net.

Tried fishing some marsh edge at high tide near dark with topwaters for trout with no luck.
