effective range

How far away can/do you spear a fish?
Are those guns easy to aim?

Depends on the bands and the size of the gun…obviously a shorter gun gets less length when shooting. I think it’s safe to say about 2.5 spear lenghts? I dunno I havn’t had to take very far shots…no more then 10 feet. The guys I speared with in FL freeshafted and they have incredible range…seems like the fish they spear out beyond my vision many of the times…they are unbelievable spearfishermen though.

what kind of gun do you have…pnumatic or band? a big 1100 cyrano pnumatic can snag a big grouper at 12 feet…but its pushing it much past that…some band guns can shoot even further, but you’d better have a reel.

Upstate, Range usually depends on the gun. I freeshaft with a 52" Rhino commercial gun using only one band to propel a 60" spearshaft. Freeshafting allows you a lot more range but i usually don’t even try long shots. I do it more for reloading speed than range. You have a very limited time down there so you have to make the most of it. You really have to make your shots count freeshafting or you will lose a shaft and a fish. The big Hogfish i shot was taken freeshaft.
Most of my shots are 10’ or so from the tip of the gun. You can close a lot of distance on a fish by keeping the gun in tight to you and extending it out right before the shot.

What exactly is free shafting?

Freeshafting is using your speargun without a line attached to the spear. You rely on accurate shots killing the fish or at least impairing his mobility enought to grab him.
