Fished the Ashley today with my dad visiting from mich. water temp. Was 49 and fished the outgoing tide. Found a good dock and challenged plastic v/a live mud minnows.was fishing in 5’ of water. Electric chicken 5 trout and 3 reds!! 2 keeper trout and 3 lil ones.all reds were keepers with one just under the limit by a 1/4’’.
Live mud minnows 0.
I never would a thunk it! Happy new yr!
On a 1/4 ounce jig head clipped to a quick clip . Have no idea Wut it really called but its the clip u tie to the line that lets you release and change louers without tieing every time
Cool deal brother! Ima try it out tomorrow. I usually fish the right side of the Ashley River coming from leeds. I’m going to try the left out past the Cosgrove bridge and see what turns up…
50/50 for us over the weekend, minnow vs artie. I think they want to see something moving this time of year. If you dropped a minnow in front of them, they ate it. If you drug the right artie near them properly, they went after it.
That’s this hockey pucks opinion. Any experts weigh in on this?
PS - Did you hook the old Man up with a chicken, or did you send him back north empty handed? Also, did you try any other arties? I just think Electric Chicken is overused and overrated. I’ve yet to catch an electric chicken, even with a mud minnow.

The thing you are talking about is a swivel with a release clip.
What kind of rig were you using when fishing the MMs? Like stonoman said, they will hide in the mud (hence the name) if fished with a bottom rig. I only say this because i’ve seen them do it when i drop them in the water off the boat. I let my MMs kick around in open water under a float, making my leader long enough so they are close to, but not sitting on the bottom. This also allows me to let the little guy drift down a bank so I cover more ground like you would when fishing an artificial. Most of the time, if the fish are there they’ll take him… But not always!
That might be the reason then. I didn’t want to mess with two poles so I just put him on a bottom rig and left it alone while I fished the e.c.
When I did have the m.m. On a cork tide was moving so fast I had to recast every 30 seconds . When I hit the first fish on the e.c. I just figured
That’s what they want to eat and never really paid no mind to the bottom rig except to change locations once in a while.
Try a MM on a jighead just like an artificial. Cast up current and reel in slowly bumping the bottom. If it’s in front of their face, they’ll eat it. Plus the mm can’t hide if you’re consantly moving it. But if you fish them that way you may as well be using an artificial. Ive just found sometimes they’ll bite live bait when they won’t bite artificials.
MM definely need to be kept moving or they find a hiding spot. As suggested, either on a float or a jighead/light bottom rig and crawled along the bottom. I do not fish a float unless there is a decent current. Typically there is a small window where the fish are at/feeding so I am constantly tending the line, reeling up, and recasting to a spot. So for me, I am either fishing a float or an artificial, not both. If I want to fish a second rod I’ll put out a bait on the bottom like crab, live or cut mullet, pinfish, or spot. In the fall a 4-5" spot is one of my favorite baits. My son and I call them “hog callers”. Big reds cannot resist them.
How are y’all catching the spot? I would assume that’s not something you can buy live at the tackle shop?
