Seems as though that lack of response from us inexperienced, low skill, Drum huntin’ bait soakers comes across as disrepecful. And SURE, soaking bait is stupid easy any maroon can do it. Have you considered though maybe some of us may have already spent counsless hours, days, months, years even decades chasing fish? So as your buddy posted, I enjoy soaking bait…very relaxing and happy-happy! Sorry for the no responseIf you catch more Kings this weekend, don’t post it! Or I’ll have to run to the beach house in North Myrtle, dig out the trolley rod, stop and get some rubber bands and clothes pins (think I still have some slider rings) and meet you on Sunday!
Good job guys!
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I may have come off disrespectful and I didn’t mean to whatsoever. Just a lot of frustrating scenarios occurring off the pier that give most educated drum fisherman a bad name. I’m sorry I came off rude to anyone that enjoys any type of fishing! TIGHT LINES EVERYONE!

These are some great fish. I would love to try king fishing. I use to pier fish in north carolina on Johnnie Mercers pier. The king fisherman on the end were very very rude. Would not talk to non king fisherman and claimed the end of the pier as their own. Saw a fisherman fishing the end of the pier smoking a cig. The kingfisherman told him to put it out that he wouldnt smoke in his house. Is this how they are on this pier as well. If not id like to give it a go.
Stevo-if you want to try kingfishng. Let me know when, this weekend’s out. I can show you. If you don’t have the gear, I have some extra that you can borrow for the day.
Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.
Most love to teach people about it. As you can see from Izzy ^^^
Any water, anywhere. I’m there.
Yes i would love to. I dont know what gear rods or whater to king fish. Yes i cant go this weekend either
Stevo-anchor rod 10’-12’ combo, spinning or casting with 20-30lb mono
fighting rod , 5’-6’ 20-50-lb rated,
fighting reel, something around the size of a 3/0 senator or tld15 to a 6/0 or tld30, no specific brand
basically something that will hold 400-600+ yards of 20-30lb mono
If you don’t have the above, I have a set-up you can use for the day
I got anchors , release clips, rod holders, etc
You will need a bait rod, cast net (optional) with extra rope, maybe a second rod for throwing gotchas mono or braid on these
Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.
For the best of me I don’t understand why y’all feel it necessary to disrespect people who surf fish. Some of the comments made on this thread and several other threads in the past have been uncalled for. No one even brought up targeting Bull reds in the surf. Y’all just for some unknown reason found it important to add to the thread and takes jabs at people who target Bull Reds. Bull reds are what the ocean gives us. We don’t have a boat, and do the best with what we got. Calling them over sized carp. Saying they aren’t a challenge. Basically saying what we do is mindless and what y’all do is “epic” and highly skilled. No one even remotely brought the subject up for debate. Y’all just found it important to talk down to us and inject it in this thread for some reason. Is it that we are incapable of appreciating that y’all have had an epic day, or is it that we feel insulted by the repedative comments made by some on this thread and threads in the past. Plenty of pier fisherman have had great day’s and posted on here before with our support. They didn’t find it necessary to talk down to us. Y’all can say you meant no disrespect at all, but clearly you have hit a nerve with several people who work very hard at being the best surf fisherman they can be. It’s tough to congratulate someone that openly shows so much disrespect for what we do. Nonetheless congratulations for such an epic day that no one has seen in" decades out at the pier." It sounds like you worked hard for it and y’all should be proud of a job well done.

At no point did we talk down surf fishing. I applaud those targetting reds in surf. It is the people who go to a pier to target, completely disregard care of the reds, and majority are THROWN back belly up
Sorry but anyone can chunk a big piece of mullet off the pier and catch bull reds. It doesn’t take skill to do it. I have no problem with people trying to be the best surf fisherman they can be but the end of the pier is not the surf. Also, like previously mentioned most people that fish for them on the pier have no idea how to fight them and release them safely. Like those who tell us to respect the bull red fisherman, how about they respect what we do and not throw all around us and then let the fish just run through our lines because they won’t run down the fish.
Thanks for sharing. Joey told me about this day, but it was awesome to put some pictures with the story.

There are loads of people out on the end of the pier that do not know what they are doing. Lumping all of them as uneducated red fishermen is inaccurate. I’ve seen both red and king fishermen so drunk they can barely stand. I’ve also seen both use the end of the diamond as a bathroom. You make the king fishermen sound so elite. Drunk, popping pills, cursing in front of kids, pissing off the end and graffiti tagging (you-know-who couldn’t even spell it right) the sign at the end of the pier. There are plenty of other stories as well. A classy bunch indeed! However, I realize not all of the king (and red) fishermen behave this way. Izzy has taught me quite a bit about king fishing and I love fishing with him, regardless of what I am targeting. You also do not participate in the illegal or obscene activities out there, which I do appreciate. There are also a handful of bottom fishermen that regularly let kids reel in their fish. There are good people out there.
Congrats on such a great day of fishing on the end of the pier. It has been a long time coming and we deserve it after putting in so much time. But quit being a loudmouth all of the time. You say you respect red fishermen in the surf but not on the pier. Why do you care what other people do for fun? The regulars that red/bottom fish for the most part chase the fish and stay out of our lines. A tourist or someone that has never done it may get us all caught up, but who cares. Tourists or newbies would have the same problems king fishing if the pier shop rented all the gear. How will they learn (though I know some never will)? Reset your lines, calm down, and continue having fun. In my years of fishing, I have only seen 3 people almost throw a red over the edge. Instead of whining about it on this forum, I actually intervened (politely and quickly) and educated them on how to properly put the fish back in the water. Guess what? They caught another red and revived it correctly. Hard to believe, I know!
Living on Folly I deal with
So on top of spot blasting the pier at he fist sign of a kings being around duo is also “that guy” at the pier it seems… That’s the 2 worst type of fishers to be the (spot blaster) and (the elitist). Much worse than being a (carp fisher) or (googan). I fished there the other day and like 5 other times this year. I have met and talked with a lot of regulars, nothing but good words to say. Everyone helped each other out from bait to rigs to general and local knowledge. I helped some people catch a few reds and the king guys helped me fine tune my king rig since it was only my second time trying it out. Slow fishing but a very nice day out. About 20 people and 40 rods covering the diamond and about a dozen upper 30 class reds were caught about 10 sharpnose 2 large rays and a small 1. About 5 reds broke off and probably 20 missed hits combined between the whole diamond on a full day of fishing. 1 guy had most of the action and the south east side of the diamond was best and north west had good action too for reds, the point was slow. Fresh cut mullet chunks are the best bait for the reds. The general opinion is the reds should be biting strong this week. The reds have been steady slow with host windows of good numbers caught on some days. I haven’t experienced any hard to deal with people or seen anybody wasted or drug activity. People do drink out there and tourist love to as questions and watch but that has never been a problem for me and when I see someone I’m am capable of helping like telling them to follow their fish and clearing lines and help net photo and release, i do. There are different challenges to pier fishing reds than surf fishing and it is harder to land a big red at the pier than in the surf or a boat. To be honest you need at least 1 person 2 ell help you do the pier shuffle and net the fish. Soaking bait is soaking bait, live or dead, bottom or surface, even if its not always grouper fishing…
I would like to know how I am “that guy”. Also, I have given back to as many fisherman as possible, whether be making sure they get offshore or inshore on boats, even as far as taking tourists I met at pier to inshore fishing areas when pier was slow. I am sorry that you have this opinion, but it is YOUR opinion. I do not need defend myself on a fishing forum, i am just fine rarely posting my fishing trips on here because of people such as yourself. As for “spot blasting”, when a king is caught at a pier you can’t really hide it, as the reports generally get posted on alot of social media sites. Sorry I posted here since there are alot of individuals on here that king fish Folly when the fish are actually here. If you have a problem with me why not address it in person instead of on a forum 40? I have fished with you several times actually, and never had issue with you, not sure why you have desire now to blast me?
Also, it is for posts like yours that few people report. Hell, I went offshore 4x in past 2 weeks, refuse post as it is always same nonsense, and just not worth my time to give reports and pictures/videos when there are always “certain people” who will have issue with it. Simple fact is this forum has fallen apart over past few years and I enjoy posting on different aspects of social media.
quote:Thanks, but will say the pics doesn't do that day justice. the excitement of hearing that clicker screaming, half-spooled in a matter of seconds, knowing it's the fish you've been chasing all season or (in my case) years. Then, landing that fish, only to hear another reel start screaming. Truly awesome. Never been that exciting to go to work Monday, just to show pics to co-workers.

Stevo, might have to wait till next season to try kingfishing, season’s all about done
Of course, that invite is open to anyone who wants to try it. Just let myself know, so that I’ll bring an extra set-up and gear
I had people, like, Randy, Bob, Rich, Sharky and others take time and teach me and I owe it to them

Sounds good to me. I will do some research over the winter and buy myself a setup. And you can show me how its done. Thanks
That is epic that one King was caught off a pier. To catch 3 big kings is phenomenal. Great report from a beautiful area.
The Kings skying is something to see. The height they reach is unbelievable. Fishing from a pier is an an art. Congratulations and thanks for sharing your day and your friends.
For the most part I was just messing with you duo. When we fished you seemed like a good dude, you helped me out and let me use some gear because it was better than mine and taught me some stuff I didn’t know about. I thought it was funny they were saying crap so figured Id join in with the classic fishing stereo types and stir it a little bit.
