exploring and sightseeing

Hey y’all, headed down for a week and I’ll have some guests who I’d like to show around. Any suggestions for daytrips? We typically head over to Otter Is but I’m looking some new ideas. Any suggestions appreciated

Botany Bay

Lots of things…

Long boat ride unless you put in at willtown or penny: Rice Mill is Kinda neat so is Willtown itself.
As listed previously: Botany Bay (by boat too) D-banks…could put in at Steamboat.
Another long boat ride…Dawhoo bridge to chuck town or Edisto to Beaufort.

4 Landlubbers: museum, shell mound (by foot or boat), Long walk to the end of state park…inlet there(carry fishing rods), whaleys on karaoke night. A few other things but they’re usually things that only I am interested in.

What is this Rice Mill you speak of?

Monkey Island

Way up Edisto, just remnants left. Chimney there on left before willtown if you’re coming from EB

How far up can I go in a 22’ boat?

The Edisto (longest undammed blackwater river in the world) gets really shallow after the bridge at Jacksonboro.

Is it tricky at all below the bridge? I read some other posts talking about a lot of sandbars, but I couldn’t tell if they meant above 17 or between the bridge and the beach

I would say it is not tricky below the 17 bridge, IF YOU ARE USED TO RUNNING RIVERS. Raddaddy and I put in at Willtown spring a year ago and ran (fished) to the bridge…no problem. But you have to know how to run a river, look for sandbars under water, trees under water, etc.

Water there is tidal all the way up to 17 (even beyond on spring tide). Plan to go a couple of hours before high with intentions of coming back around high or just after. I’d say the river is really safe for boating, even for a 22’er no matter what the tide is doing. But then again, I grew up on the Salkehatchie…The edisto might as well be the Mississippi to me. As for the ride, it is really a pleasant trip. Im thinking of riding from the west bank landing to the Dawhoo bridge sometime before shrimping season(in a canoe). Shrimping season…ahhh.

If it is calm - take a trip over to Deveaux Bank @ mouth of North Edisto - do not go above marked areas - bird nesting grounds. You can also go to Botany by water this way.

You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry.

if you are already on the north edisto side, bohicket has some great places to eat and plenty of dock space. Reds Icehouse is good for a cool beer and prices on food aren’t bad at all. Its a nice ride to go S Edisto to Dahoo, then N Edisto to Bohicket creek.

Monkey Island and then Beaufort would be a great day trip. Plenty to do in Beaufort and it’s a easy ride. I wouldn’t try Edisto to the 17 bridge if you haven’t done it before. Old pilings and larger than normal sand grains can mess up a motor and ruin your day. I sheared a drive shaft on a 25hp about 20 years ago. I had a long walk back to West Bank. Also have hit a sandbar years ago and burned up a new 90hp.

Bohicket is a nice ride too. If you head there and it’s near low tide, take a detour up the creek that is to the left before you get to the big(174) bridge. Stay in the middle and it won’t get less than 12’. There are a bunch of gators in that creek.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

There’s a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

How is the ramp at Willtown Bluff? Is it usable at any tide? I was researching about doing some diving in that area.

If you’re going to that area, I think it would be a good idea to put in on the other side of the river. West Bank landing, Jacksonboro. good ramp
