Since I moved here in January I’m “supposed” to be figuring out how to fly fish for reds. I put in a fair bit of paddle time this winter and saw a lot of new places, caught some trout on the fly. Since spring, I can’t seem to get out during the good tailing tides. Consequently, I’ve given in to surf fishing. I’ve found a few nice lonely spots to kayak out to, and a couple of bike-to spots. I haven’t been killing it, but I’ve consistently been catching smallish sharks.
Sunday I fished from 2 hours before high until an hour before low. I got one decent black tip, a couple smaller sharpnose, 5 or 6 hateful big rays, 2 trout, a red, and dozens of whiting. I converted many of the whiting to bait and still took a dozen home and ate them. I’ve always enjoyed surf fishing; now that I have consistent access to it, I might get kind of addicted. Next round of good tides, back to the fly rod.
