I finally have a great program that is almost dead on. PM me if you need some numbers converted.

Could you share the program? I’ve got hundreds of numbers I’d like to get an accurate conversion of.

Cracker; I think he wants you to send him your numbers:smiley: Good ploy:wink:

I can not send the program. I doubt if anyone on here has a greater collection of numbers than I do. As most fishermen know, it isn’t the number but when to fish it. I have tried all the free software for many years, most are not even close enough to allow you to find the reason you saved the number in the first place. Will I have a record of your number, yes, will I use it… I doubt it. So, this is no ploy but a offer to convert for many of my fellow fishermen. Easy, I don’t know you but I have spoken to Larry and will leave my offer open.

Just to demonstrate the accuracy of the program— General Gordon- converted to 3210.040 8033.295 from 45580.3 61097.2 On SCDNR site it is 3210.040 8033.233.

I guess you didn’t notice the smiley and winky faces?
I was just kidding too, Big Bite I appreciate the offer and will take you up on it. I’ve been accumulating numbers from the time LORAN was invented until it went obsolete and I’ve got thousands of them. I don’t mind sharing them a bit, it took me a lifetime to get them and would take another lifetime to fish them all one time each. Some are pretty dang good and worth saving.
I’ve tried a couple of programs and they haven’t been very accurate. Thanks again for the offer I’ll go through some of my log books and get a few to you if you don’t mind.
It still ticks me off that the Feds shut down LORAN

Completely un-related to fishing, but relevant:
I’m a GIS analyst and Cartography Systems Administrator, I do this crazy math and data conversion for a living. Python/C++ code decryption, metadata conversion, etc. However, I’m too young to have experienced LORAN first hand. When I was born in '85 it was old-news in comparison to GPS/GLONASS. Loran-C I hoped would survive, but as we all know by '09 it pretty much met it’s fate. Larry, don’t be upset that it was de-commissioned. Losing the simple capability to use old numbers I’m sure is aggravating, but it was for a good reason to improve. Especially in a time of war. When a device operates in the 90-110 khz range it’s not good enough anymore. In the low-frequency world of technology that we consider “Modern”, there is simply too much interference. Too many devices, and that frequency is unstable and cluttered for hundreds of other reasons. Amazing in it’s time, but the power of GPS/GLONASS even GALILEO is far superior in nearly every aspect outside the lens of reverence and clearly-defined simplicity.
I do agree, though, that it’s still very fascinating. It interests me very much, and if a simple DOS/.NET (or similar) program exists to translate it directly within a small percentage of error I would really appreciate some more information. I can post-process with modern data/history to the state GPS conversion system relatively easily if it’s accurate within a couple yards.
Anyway, hope that made sense. A reply in this thread is perfectly fine, for a private message would do no good for the man who forgets to ever read them!
Also, don’t worry about the mythical secret numbers you’ll read about on here. A) People are overprotective of “numbers” they think are secret when in reality it’s relatively common knowledge. Good men share them! (jokes, folks) B) I’m interested honestly out of sheer curiosity because it relates so closely to the evolution of my career field C) I am selling the only boat I have capable of reaching any off-shore points and D)I
Garmin’s Bluechart software has a very good algorithm also. It converted your Loran-C to N32 09.900 W80 33.021. Pretty close…
I have tried the Garmin and other manufacturers conversion and they always were off. Depending on the need, usually by enough to make most of us give up on small structures.
I agree with A Salt that numbers are just that. I mentioned before that without context of when to use them or how, just a location.
Even more interesting is how many of us will not convert nor share old TDs for fear of giving up a spot, however it is not suable to us without a conversion.
I was looking through my local Hilton Head numbers which is from Charleston to below Savannah and I have over 20 pages of numbers on a spreadsheet. Of those I might still recall why less than a 1/3 of them are there.

If you would like to share the wealth I have several TD I would like to convert. I can be reached @843-592-1457 or text. Tight Lines
Interesting. I thought it was closer. My numbers are 100 yards off and wildlife’s are 500 yards off. This is according to google earth…

MY buddy,(who is no longer with us) Bought a program out of Fla. 17 years ago and changed all out our Loran # to Lat. & long. when we first got a GPS, and never looked back, Don’t know were the thing went or the name of it. It seamed to work well. The old Loran was in a boat that we bought and belonged to a comm. fisherman and had 100’s of # in it, since then the GPS croaked and I only have a few of the old # in my fly bridge GPS.
Mahalo-Kai I tried to give you a call and left a message.
