Well, I ordered all the parts I need to build thegravity feeder. I’ll take pics of the finished product for you guys. In the end, I will have two Banks 275lbs gravity feeders, and this 400lbs gravity feeder. So, my plan is to fill all of them with a grand total of 950lbs of corn and probably 50 -100lbs on the ground under the ports of each one. That amount of corn will last me a long time even with a bunch of deer eating out of them. I should only have to fill up mid way through the season. My mid way fill up will be the day I plant the oats the last week of Sept (maybe top off toward the end of Nov too) so I kill two birds with one rock. Then while I’m on vacation time from 20 Oct to 20 Nov, the oats should be around 6-8 inches high, and the feeders will still have plenty of corn in them. I won’t need to go in the hunting area at all except to get a camera card every two weeks or so or to pick up a dead deer body (ha,ha).

Yep, yall sure do go to a lot of trouble just for a deer
In my experience, they will soon get used to your scent and it won’t bother them at all. You will probably have better success if you walk through it every day and let them get used to smelling you, then they won’t spook when they do. Just a suggestion. They ain’t as elusive as most people think.
The feeders behind the house help keep them out of my garden too…and I know better than to plant beans. I think they would try to get into the house almost for beans. Crazy deer. ha,ha,ha. In the end though, I completely understand what you are talking about, but I’m after big boy instead of the everyday run-of-the-mill deer or small buck. Let em eat. Let em get comfortable, and I will drop the hammer on big boy. Until big boy shows up, I will be deer watching for a good while. That sucker showed up last season on the last day of Nov. He never made a single appearance during legal shooting hours.

Apparently, the deer like what I have been doing too:
I stopped shooting little bucks, but this one is big enough to make my hit list. I’m gona let the air out of him.
Smoked a few fish Saturday night too:
This my first time getting out this year with the gig. The wind has been too much, or I have been busy. I hope to get a couple more good trips. Three good hauls like this per year lasts me the rest of the year, and I have a few extra for special freinds.

Thanks DoubleN and Cracker. First time getting out there with the gig this year. A couple more trips will finish it off for me. As you all know, it is mostly about getting calm enough conditions to do it in the first place. Can’t see fish when you can’t see the bottom because of muddy water due to wind.
As far as the deer, I did a ton of work to get ready for this season. Next season will be better. I have more work to do. For example, I’m going to run an underground PVC pipe out to my new stand, and build a spigot. Then, I can run water hoses out into my plots for times like right now when mother nature is not sending me any rain.

I like the stairs to the stand. Every year I hear of someone getting injured climbing in or out of a deer stand. That’s bad news if you are in the woods by yourself!

Did you ever read the story that RussB posted a few years back? It was pretty incredible.
Thanks 23Sailfish. Great guy. Lots of good info in there for woodsmen. I think I will bump it back on here for the benefit of the few who have not read it.
It is upside down now. The legs will go on Friday, and I will put it out filled full of corn. Besides knowing a person that has access to metal tubing for the legs for free, nothing about building one of these is difficult at all. I already have my deer “trained,” sorta speak, to eat out of feeders, so they ought to take to this one very quickly.

It is basically the sun resistant plastic. I bought the parts I needed, and I put it together last night and painted it. Now, I just have to put the legs and feet on, put it in place, and fill it. Whooohooo…way less trips toput out corn this season for sure.

Skeeter, i had a plastic feeder awhile back and those dang squirrels chewed a big hole in it. It was the spreader type, so when everything was gone off the ground, I guess they couldn’t wait till the next cycle.Little bastards like chewing chit up…it’s what they do:imp:!
You may not have that problem with yours, but if you do, i have some galvanized hardware cloth that you can have and easily make a cover to drop over it. No strings attached, got a couple places to hunt. I go to Beaufort often and can get it to ya.

I will let you know for sure. I have the galvanized steel lip that goes on the top, and that should help a bit. i will certainly let you know if it is a probelm though. Thanks man.
