Finger Mullet

Alright so I may be asking a really REALLY dumb question but I can’t seem to pinpoint an exact answer so please bear with me. So I found out the lady has a cast net for whatever reason and I’m thinking of taking it with me to try and catch some bait this weekend. Learned how to throw it decent yesterday. Problem is I have no clue where exactly I’m suppose to be looking for finger mullet out there. Should I just cast it into a trough and hope for the best or am I suppose to be able to see them? All the times I have gone out I feel like I barely see anything at the shore. I’m also new to surf fishing so by all the times I have gone out I mean 4 times so far. Just some advice on how far out I should be looking and where exactly. I feel like wherever I’m fishing should work though. It’s just a matter of whether they are running or not. Thanks!

Yes. There has been alot of bait in the surf lately. Walk out about knee deep, in the trough, stand still for a bit and let the fish come near, throw your net on them. A pair of polorized sun glasses wil help you see. I personally don’t throw a net in the surf any more. I did see a guy couple weeks ago netting big horse mullet, 15"-18". The mullet I’ve be seeing are good sized. Lots of mud minnows in the cuts and wash as well.

Try the tide pools as well. I’ve netted a ton of mullet in them over the last couple weeks.

I normally wade out as far as I can then wait and wait and wait, don’t chase, stand still! sometimes it takes me 30 mins before I cast! But that’s all I need, one cast would fill a 5 gallon bucket! Depends on the day too, you can actually see them breaking the surface.

Awesome! Thanks a lot guys. So basically I should go out towards a trough and play the waiting game for a bit until I see them come by. I’ll give it a shot next time I go out there. Not this weekend unfortunately since wind speeds are predicted to be at about 25mph Saturday O_O
