Finally (after years of trying) caught my first cobia! Went to the bridge saturday morning, set out chum bags and cut herring for bait. After the tide turned had a 40 lb fish come up and sniff the chum bag on top. After freaking out, I grabbed my spinning rod with bucktail and a 9" artificial eel pitched it over the side …he charged! Unfortunately he turned at the last moment, and went back under the boat to continue torturing me for the next 5 minutes. I threw everything I had at him, he wanted nothing to do with it. I had turned down live eels that morning at Mikes Marine, because of my fear of snakes, and their resemblence to the no-legged creatures. I was really regretting that right now, as I had no live bait! So, I went back to Mikes, bought the nasty critters for another attempt on Sunday. Went back the next day, put out 4 live eels…waited and waited…nothing. Having the kids with us this time I decided to hook a piece of the now rank herring on a hook to maybe catch a shark. After about 10 minutes, rod went screaming!!! The fish came straight to the surface! He hauled but, got wrapped up in a balloon line, but at least I still had him on! We fought him for about 10 minutes and finally had him tired enough to boat… only one problem, forgot the gaff! Tried to net him, but he wouldnt fit. So I had to put the gloves on and grab his gills (as he was doing his death rools) and sling him in the boat! All the while some idiots were repositioning their boat next to me at full throttle making a huge wake ( thanks to whoever you were!!!) Anyway, we did what we came to do and got our grilling meat for the evening! Awesome day!!! I have a pic, but as before its difficult to post a pic on this site!!
